Yeah I'm bailing on Cannonsburg too. They've got rain and 50F in the forecast on Friday and another 54F or so on Saturday. It's just not worth it to make that drive solo. Plus I'll probably get some brownie points with the wife if I stay local since I'll be home sooner.
But I *really* want to hit that bag... well my UP trip is getting nixed I think on account of the weather (Boho doesn't even know *when* they'll open...) so maybe I'll end up at Boyne instead; they will have the airbag the weekend of 1/25. For this Saturday I am debating PK vs. Holly of course I want to ride with you guys but that park can suck a big one when it's hot out like this. It's just too shallow of a slope. Jumps will probably be knuckle city if they're set up on snowstream because it's not steep enough to carry speed when it's 50+ outside. I would be fairly surprised if they're not open Saturday. They're advertising 20-40" base, that ain't going anywhere between now & then even with a little bit of rain they'll still have everything open. |

I don't know what Holly will have available, I was just...unimpressed with the maintenance of PK. Dude seriously, the crater was over waist deep on the simple boxes. Though in hindsight I probably could have hit the jumps, they were no worse than what I did at Hawk Island, just just more people in the peanut gallery gawking.

I hear holly has about 12 features up right now counting the 2 jumps, I think. Currently no boxes (all undergoing maintenance) but my sources tell me they should have some ready by Saturday.

I don't know if she's right or not but I know a chick that owns a shop in Toronto, she recommended that instead of Vail we do Beaver Creek "because it's more boarder friendly".
I'm just passing the info along, no idea if it's valid or not.

I think I'm going to be the newest rider on the CO trip.

Mike goes to CO or Tahoe every winter. He doesn't really ride park other than the occasional ride-on flat box or whatever. I haven't seen him hit any jumps either, although I know he used to hot dog it on skis when he was younger (now 39 I think). So he's mostly just cruising groomers around here. Out west probably looks for the steeps & bowls.
I think this is the appeal of Vail

The Back Bowls and Blue Sky Basin are what Vail is all about IMO, though there are plenty of good runs on the front too (Chair 11 = Northwoods area, Game Creek Bowl on the opposite side can be good also).
I'm guessing that the lady friend told you BC was more boarder friendly probably because Vail has a lot of cat walks to get to other areas... For example, to get from the front of Vail to Blue Sky Basin... normally takes like 30min at least. But its not too big of a deal. Beaver Creek is awesome - probably my 2nd favorite of the Epic resorts out here, after Vail. Steep, a lot of vertical (over 4k I believe). Royal Elk Glades are awesome if there is good snow. There wasn't enough snow last year to go, but Stone Creek Chutes are supposed to be pretty cool too (pillows/cliffs). You'll have fun at either place. One other bonus of Beaver Creek... at 3pm they bring out warm Chocolate Chip Cookies every single day. |
