Actually, I have been there once. It was late in the season the first few months into learning to ride. It was crowded, slushy, I wasn't overly impressed, but,...

Since I was just barely competent linking my turns, still really slow, I was really limited to what I could ride there, so that 1st impression isn't based on much experience with the place.

I'm willing to give it another try now that I could ride most of what it offers. Especially iftheykeep getting snow n open early!!!

[edit: ]
....I still think it's pretty ridiculous to call that back country tho!

Cab on the weekends can be a clusterfuck of long lift lines and traffic jam slopes. They're cheap and the closest of the northern resorts to the college kids.

I always smell weed in the trees there. haha

I always smell weed in the parking lot, too...

FYI: Ski Brule was blowing snow last night, Indianhead has received over a foot so far (not sure what the accumulation is like though, haven't checked their snow report). Neither resort open yet, and unfortunately they're ~500-600mi away, but it's always promising when MI resorts start firing up the guns.

...that and all those little 30-50 ft. intersecting side trails, the cross traffic on their hill had me shittin' my pants. Ironically, that was the only time and resort I rode without a helmet! (Got cocky after my first 6-7 weeks riding!)

Caberfae is basically where I learned to ride. I like it there and when I started called it my home mountain. But I'm at the point if I'm going to make the drive up there, I'll spend an extra half hour or so and go to Crystal. There are just so many more runs and the layout is much better.

But Caberfae after a fresh dumping of snow is actually a lot of fun. Especially for the price.

Been reading up on this Sugarloaf thing. Is it just me or does this all seem really shady? I obviously don't know him and have no good reason to say this, but the new owner seems like a DB.

It all seems really shady because of who's involved and his track record. I'm fairly certain that he's a sociopath. Not a murdering sociopath, just a normal run-of-the-mill sociopath who thinks the rules don't apply to him, his shit doesn't stink, and everyone should just bow to him all the time.

Well I was trying to be PC about it, but yea that's basically where I'm at on him as well. Just from what I can tell anyways. He looks like he's read one-too-many Robert Kiyosaki books.

Further reading, mostly in the comments where some of his old employees and customers sound off:

The Block Hotel’s Liko Smith Arrested at Boardistan

including Liko who responds in several places, here's a snippet where he foreshadows the Sugar Loaf (keep in mind this was in early 2010, about the time he was first planning the Sugar Loaf deal I think)

Quote:
.I was too big of a bang and too small of a business..so they were able to hurt me..never again. There will be more blocks, just keep reading your paper. Every righteous investor will get paid back, ..every sponsor will get tenfold what they put into it and every customer will get a well run hotel. I am into the big leagues, I have four guys I work with, all mulitimillionaires who “can lose’ the money if we’re wrong and make a shitload if we’re right but no more small time, we’re going for 150 room plus full service hotels, and the resorts, and golf courses that make money, run by hotel people, paycash to investors and hire entire communities of people and in the end; no more gettin monkey fucked by small minded people in any form. That’s a promise. Some of you may hate me, shit,,.I don’t blame you.. I do dumb shit just like you do; but I don’t screw anybody
There's a ton of stuff at teh Glen Arbor Sun site, too, I can't find it all now but like the "fundraiser" that he did at the Red Ginger, but then miraculously didn't have enough money or his wallet was lost/stolen so he didn't have a credit card either, they graciously let him reserve it on credit (and then he never paid them for it despite promising that he'd send a check), etc.

Here's one where he maintains its arms-length and he is not a "front man" for the Polsellis:

As acquisition date nears, hurdles loom for Sugar Loaf resort |Glen Arbor Sun

Quote:
Not one penny of Remo’s money or influence will be involved. And that goes for Hanna Karcho as well. There’s no way in the world they will have any influence in this deal. It’s strictly a Liko Smith project. I’m nobody’s front man. -
Incidentally, someone called bullshit on this, one of his former associates. I think he actually is willing to talk to me too but I haven't gotten in touch with him.... maybe I will now, I was under the impression this Travis guy was just a former Block employee with an axe to grind, but it sounds like at least in 2010 he had some legit information, maybe he's got some more now, too, but really, I'm tired of the Liko circus. The sooner he crashes and burns the sooner (maybe) someone else can pick up the pieces.

It's highly entertaining stuff. I just read the Glen Arbor Sun's article where they contacted Oscar Peters and he wound up sending Smith a cease and desist letter. Wow. I mean this guy really is something else!
