Trip report from Crystal yesterday:

We got up there at about 9am and it was snowing lightly in spite of the fact that they weren't really calling for any. It was cold, about 12 degrees when we first got there and never got above 18 the whole day. On top of the light natural snowfall, they were running roughly two-thirds of their snow guns the entire day we were there. The base on the slopes themselves was definitely much improved over the previous weekend.

But in the trees, you could see that some of that snow had taken a hit from that warmup and rain they had last week. I was playing over in the Glacier Valley Gladed area, mostly between Abendroth and JT's Trail and there was a surprising amount of untracked natural snow, probably at least 4 or 5 inches. The downside that it was a bit crusty underneath this, but it was still a lot of fun playing around in.

As for the groomed runs, they were actually kind of hit and miss. The blues coming off the side of Loki were generally pretty good, packed powder that softened up a bit as it got tracked out. They also opened the North Face this weekend, leaving only one lift (The Ridge) unopened, but they were blowing snow and had the snowcats working all day to get that ready for next weekend. We went over to the North Face for a few runs, but it was actually a bit disappointing in that it was really hard, crusted over corduroy and there wasn't much snow in the transition area between groomed runs. For obvious reasons, they have not gotten the boardercross course set up over there yet.

The real fun was between Cheers and Main Street, where they were letting the guns blow all day and were letting it pile up in spots. While it wasn't anything like natural powder, it was still a shit ton of fun playing around in and surfing those huge swaths of man-made "pow". We rode for a solid 6 hours and probably spent 80 percent of that time alternating between taking the Clipper up and running down Main Street and taking Buck up and doing the same thing. Never got bored with it. Pretty fun day overall.

They are closed midweek this week and I believe they open for normal seasonal hours this Friday.

Voted for you bro, I do like the other camo entry right above yours but I don't think the green Marhar logo fits the design.

I suppose I should post up my impressions of the "New & Improved" Mt. Brighton. Sab, since you went there last night, I'd be interested in your opinion on this as well.

I was there for about 3.5 hours Sat. waiting to hook up with Argo. Saw DaveZ just in time to say hello before he had to split. I rode for the first 2-2.5 myself. Honestly? I'm wondering where that 10 mil went?

The New #3 lift was a HUGE improvement on the antique piece of crap they did have, but the rest of the open lifts looked like maybe they were just refurbished. It looks to me like they got rid of the wood slats & just bolted new plastic seats on the old chairs. Dunno for sure tho. Dave's been more often than I so he might know for sure.

Nothing on the backside was open, so all the front side runs are short as F#%$! (...not that the backside runs are particularly long, but they are longer than the front.) It was hard packed man made which was all chopped up & rutted and even quite icy in spots. This is probably a more fitting comment on my skill level rather than the quality of the slope conditions, but I came close to slamming with a caught edge several times on this hard rutted junk. (...had flashbacks to my Hip Pointer Slams after my lesson & first two days riding which was done there at Mt. Brighton, So I didn't really care for that!)

I only saw one kid working the lifts who was doing his job and keeping the offload area well kept. So on the number 3 lift, you end up offloading on ice, usually into a crowd of kids. It wasn't really crowded at all, yet the lift lines got pretty chaotic at times.

Honestly, for $35 to ride 1-5pm? (....discounted 10% btw!) If I hadn't been waiting to meet Argo, I probably would have split for Holly or PK after my first few runs!

When they get the new park setup open after the 14th, You park guys will likely have something to rave about, but for general cruising the slopes? I still have to go with, ...Brighton Sucks!

I'd be interested to hear other impressions tho!

Oh I see how it is Chomps, I come out and post a trip review and you got to outdo me. Dang, it's on like Donkey Kong beeeyatch!

Ha, anyways since you mentioned the crowds of kids it reminded me that Crystal was fucking dead yesterday. I mean, we literally skated right up to the lift all day with NO LINES. They had rope lines up early in the day and took them down by noon when they realized they didn't need them.

Nah, Your review just reminded me that I said I was gonna post my impressions of the place. Figured it would be appropriate since I'm not all jazzed by any of the new park stuff.

BTW, I'm a little worried about Argo & his family. Looks like they would have been leaving Minn. right in time for that F'd up mess on 94. Haven't seen a post from them in this or the Epic thread since Sat/Sun morning.

Hope they're just home & catching up on sleep!

-edit-
If I see he hasn't posted by later today, I'll text him to make sure they made it back ok! (...obviously I'm not worried about his winter driving skills, it's all the other morons on the road who's stupidity you have to avoid!)

oh man, that must have been glorious. I'm looking forward to getting up there to ride with you sometime this year. You'll have to be my tour guide.

Chomps-

I was never really there enough to notice many differences. Snowmaking and new lifts aren't cheap though.

I noticed that the interior was much improved. Less smelly cafeteria and more decent place for a few brews.

I actually thought of inviting you for yesterday but up until late Saturday night we thought there was already a third guy coming.

Thanks for considering man. I wouldn't have been able to because I had my daughter with me. I usually can only get up there every other weekend unless I'm hauling the entire clan up with me.

Lmk if you are going to head up. I might be up for an overnighter. Head up Sat. morning, head home Sun. (...yeah, I'll proly bitch about the drive!) At least I can afford the gas for that sort of quicky trip now.
