Alright everyone since Summer is over, fall has just begun and we've already had our first rail jam of the year, it's time to start a new thread for the 10/11 winter.

Last year we had the "Southeast" michigan thread, but I think we should do all of Michigan. Sure, most of population lives in S/E michigan but we all ride the same resorts in the LP and even the UP if we get a chance, so we should have one thread to bring everyone together.

Cheers everyone we're probably only like 70 days from open resorts!

Good to hear. Also, I certainly don't care what kind of company it is (ski/snowboard) as long as the quality is there. I just can't seem to find pants with that kind of waterproof/breathability rating for anywhere near what I'm paying for these. That's the main reason I had to ask for an opinion; because it seemed to good to be true and I wondered if I was giving up quality elsewhere as a result.

Where'd you pick them up? Online or in store?

I'm going to be making a trip down to Troy in a few weeks and was going to check a few stores out, but since Bonfire's site is down I can't find a dealer locator. Anyone have any recommendations of where to check out down there?

My wife also wants to see if she can get a pair of last years skis somewhere if they're priced right. I am aware of Boyne Country Sports, REI, and Moosejaw.

Online. I forget which retailer, I think it might have been Evo.

You'd have to ask one of the Detroit guys about retailers for skis, since you're near the border. I'm up in Lansing so can't help you much there. I did buy my wife some skis and boots at Summit Sports a couple years ago and she really loves them. I don't know if they have a location down in the Detroit area though.

Summit is definitely worth checking out if you're near one, but like I said I just wouldn't drive a long ways for the place. The guys at the EL shop are pretty good though, especially with skiing stuff.

I just wondered if there was some sort of grand opening or an event or something like that. If this becomes a full-fledged SF-Michigan meetup I might be down for getting over there. It's a Friday, so I'd have my boys with me, but maybe would be a good chance to get them riding, if the place is open.

Just wondering if anyone had any info on Caberfea's claim that they were opening up "Quote" backcountry "Un-Quote" this season. Is that a joke? What, r they just opening up a side of one of those 2-300 ft hills without any lift access and calling it BC just cuz you have to hoof it back up?

Are they thinning some trees for a grove type run, or r they just letting people duck into the woods? Seems a little disingenuous to lable that as backcountry.

Their web site claims they will have the only BC in the LP. No snowmaking, no grooming, no lift access. (...and I presume no Patrol?)

Just wondering if anybody had any additional 411 on this?

Oh, and if I'm not up at Boyne that weekend, I will definitely be at Brighton on the 6th.

Guys, check out the "Epic race" thread for more details on Argo's reasons for driving 20+ hours to come to Mt. Brighton! (...no, it's not because he's insane either. Just crazy maybe!) ;)

Oh, now I understand why he is going to Mt. Brighton...a place I have never been to in spite of the fact that it is only about an hour from my house.

Actually, I have been there once. It was late in the season the first few months into learning to ride. It was crowded, slushy, I wasn't overly impressed, but,...

Since I was just barely competent linking my turns, still really slow, I was really limited to what I could ride there, so that 1st impression isn't based on much experience with the place.

I'm willing to give it another try now that I could ride most of what it offers. Especially iftheykeep getting snow n open early!!!

[edit: ]
....I still think it's pretty ridiculous to call that back country tho! ;)

I always smell weed in the parking lot, too...

FYI: Ski Brule was blowing snow last night, Indianhead has received over a foot so far (not sure what the accumulation is like though, haven't checked their snow report). Neither resort open yet, and unfortunately they're ~500-600mi away, but it's always promising when MI resorts start firing up the guns.

Caberfae is basically where I learned to ride. I like it there and when I started called it my home mountain. But I'm at the point if I'm going to make the drive up there, I'll spend an extra half hour or so and go to Crystal. There are just so many more runs and the layout is much better.

But Caberfae after a fresh dumping of snow is actually a lot of fun. Especially for the price.

Been reading up on this Sugarloaf thing. Is it just me or does this all seem really shady? I obviously don't know him and have no good reason to say this, but the new owner seems like a DB.

It's highly entertaining stuff. I just read the Glen Arbor Sun's article where they contacted Oscar Peters and he wound up sending Smith a cease and desist letter. Wow. I mean this guy really is something else!

You said it! Is it snow up north?

BTW, just now paid for my season pass to PK and I got the Holly upgrade too!
(....wish I'd done this last year. would have saved me about $600-$700 dollars just riding PK!) :dunno:

60+ this season!!! I can feel it!

I get 6 weeks. I always take December 15th - Jan 2nd ish off. That is usually good for 15 days of skiing. The way the calendar works out the 13th will be my last day and I will return on the 6th. I usually hit 50 or so days. Sounds like a lot but I take my kids some week days and we have to get home at a decent time so its only for 3 hours or so.

Yeah, sucks now, but get it right and you won't wind up 50 years old and driving a truck! Going broke paying for those 50-60 day seasons! get a degree, Get a good job, Make lots of money, and shred the best resorts until your waaaay past 50! ;)
