I use sites like 3hive.com to find new, obscure-esque music then proceed to buying.
iTunes is great, but MP3sale is kinda cool too (real cheap, there's no DRM, not sure about the legality of it though).

..is where I search for music. They have lots of underground stuff, which is what I love. None of that played out, corporate sponsored bull crap.

most of my music collection is live bootlegs from shows i've been to. any pressed cd i have usually comes from the record label, in exchange for the promoting i do. i do have an iPod & buy some things from iTunes, but not much or very often. Soulseek & archive.org are probably my two biggest download sites i use.

In Canada, it is not illegal "yet" to download music off the net, and so lawcourts will not hold in favour of any lawsuits. There are active campaigns from the Americans to promote the purchase of music from download sites (for example Coke allows you to earn music points etc) as well as Canadian artists petitioning the feds to follow suit. US politicians are petitioning the Canadian feds to create laws protecting US DRM, and with Harper in the chair it is very possible that may happen. So right now it is more of a moral question as opposed to a legal one, so download away if you want.

I have over a months worth of music in my iTunes library. 90% are from cds. Every now and then ill hear a song I like on the radio and ill buy it off of iTunes. I used album base for a little bit, but I think I downloaded some type of virus which caused my computer to crash. Luckily, I keep all my music on an external hd.
