Amen! The Mars Volta...controled chaos. Almost every song is a 10min jam session. I love it. Deloused is my favorite album they have released.

i can never shake this feeling that deloused is a very dark and twisted painting, and being familiar with the plot, this is no surprise....
frances, however, had its own beauty in very different ways.
omar took control as bandleader and producer crafting the vast majority of what was actually coming out of the recordings. while he's not always the best guitarist, he sure as fuck knows how to put together some epic music. the track "the widow" is lame, of course, but they gotta make singles to survive. cygnus hits you harder than almost anything they've ever produced, l'via is an intense series of in your face rock and chilled out latin dub, and cassandra is ridiculously epic (and drawn out, of course).
i must say that amputechture is leaning in the direction of "a difficult listen" but you can't possibly tell me that after honestly listening to it ten or more times that there is no pure genius to be found on this album.
while the bedlam in goliath has a lot of bullshit (universal records hype) behind it (not to mention an increasing emergence of riders on the bandwagon,) volta is still just poking and prodding at the boundaries, trying to decide which ones they really want to puncture and which ones to leave alone.
long live the volta.

Hmm, where do I start. Godspeed is the shiet. East Hastings is the best song. The movie 28 Days Later btw, is fuckin awesome. (and got me into post rock in the first place).
How about... God is an Astronaut, Sigur Ros, Explosions in the Sky?
Sigur Ros performed at our school (UCLA) a couple months ago and I saw their movie. Cept it's kind of a drag when you're not high.
Mogwai anyone? Glasgow mega-snake, favorite song in the universe. haha i'm done rambling.

i've only heard mogwai and explosions in the sky, and not a lot of them either... but good shit, good shit.
tortoise has made some music that reminded me of the mogwai that i've heard.
also, a kind of obscure group called Xploding Plastix has been in my playlists a lot recently.
omar rodriguez-lopez (the mars volta's guitarist) has done some really good solo shit,
and if you're into dub, check out de facto.
de facto was a psychedelic dub project that actually had cedric (volta's singer) on drums, omar on bass, ikey (volta's keys) on keys, and jeremy michael ward (volta's late sound manipulator circa deloused) doing vocals and sounds.
de facto was one of the reasons volta got started in the first place, definitely check them out.
