One of my fav albums of all time. Initial listen to the new Radiohead album was underwhelming...sounded too much like Amnesiac IMO. I'll need a few more listens and maybe it'll grow on me. Last edited by itchynscratchy; 02-22-2011 at 11:19 AM. |

One of the most emotionally and sonically intense rock albums by anyone -- male or female.

Ok, I gave the album a listen 3 times over in the car this morning on my way to school.
1st impression: Thought it was good, but nothing really caught my attention. Tracks were sort of low energy, and the music didn't have the typical "grab you" effect. Only like 2 tracks sort of stood out. 2nd impression: After listening to it another 2 times, I actually abandoned my original thoughts and started really liking it. This album uses a much more ambient type of electronica, one that isn't in your face and allows you to be disconnected with the music on a certain level. It takes a certain style from "In Rainbows", but it also covers a new sound that I haven't heard before in other albums. The more I listen to it, the more I pay attention to the underlayer melodies and the richer the music becomes. I listened to "In Rainbows" right after listening to this album, and actually preferred "King of Limbs". One of the biggest downsides of this album however is that it's too short, I think a longer album would have allowed the band to cover the different style more wholly, producing a more rounded album. 8/10

Thanks for commenting. In Rainbows is far from my favorite Radiohead album, but I'd honestly take the track "Bodysnatchers" (or "Jigsaw Falling Into Place") from that record over all of The King of Limbs put together. That's partly a matter of taste, I admit; for me, one great rocker is far better than a handful of decent-to-good ambient-style tracks.
I've listened to my entire Radiohead collection multiple times over the past few days, and it's still the case for me that King of Limbs seems to have some key pieces missing, like Kid A minus "Everything In Its Right Place," "Optimistic," and "Morning Bell." This may not be relevant to some listeners, but does "Bloom" on King of Limbs remind you of Talking Heads? Every time I hear it, I think, "Remain In Light, side 2, somewhere between 'Seen and Not Seen' and 'The Overload.'" |

Part of the reason why I think I really like it, is because lately I've been totally turned off to alternative and rock because they're such a stagnant genre with people doing the same shit over and over. I think I like King of Limbs since it's a little more ambient and less rocker.
