Real hip hop is not even something. Tastes in music and how our feeling at the time make it relateable more or less. Regardless, I'm surprised no one mentioned gangstarr. Its like they are a staple in skate n snow vids. Funk west coast, DPG, earlier 213, early BBC, epmd-back to business or a lot of mid 90s def jam. Love onyx grimey rap 2nd album beats so dirty. RIP JMJ. Lost boyz legal drug money. CNN War report, nore solo. Bone thugs e1999. . AEOM 2PAC, early outlast aquemini is classic. My first taste of south was goodie mob soul food, before the term dirty south was coined outside of atl. Southern tracks by organized noise. Dungeon family. After 2000...eclipse lord willin, p crack Lotta mix tape rappers, a-team, fan has a bunch of really good street content good beat'd mix tapes. Saigon, tons of material produced by jus blaze. Oh yea KILLA can n dip set. Not the most consistent but they got jewels. Then there's staples like wu catalogye, nas, jAy(reasonable doubt). Choclair dropped an album 'from the crate' or something that I highly recommend as being a rap nerd. Love rap music. Peace yall

well obviously a lot of those groups and artists are staples in what real old school hip hop was, but he was asking what happened to real hip hop so i was inclined to include people who have put out albums within the last couple years or are still putting good shit out. good list though.

Autocorrect messd It up. Forgot to mention mob deep. Any song they have w rae and/ or nas is good. There's a video online of nas 'snowboarding'...not really. But I like his enthusment. Hot97 dj Cypha sounds boards up at Vermont. And DJ envys radio show is spnsered by neff... kinda odd but target market branding/product placements what its about. Glad rap n boarding can come together. The tech big n PAC boards are sick but they'd be art pieces rather then fun tools. I am old school. I remember line dancing g to billy ray cirrus in elementary school, n now the kids dance to board approved soulja boy. "Things done changed"bigs voice

Kanye is where it's at nowadays. His newest stuff (G.O.O.D. music) hasn't been that great, but College Dropout, Late Registration, Graduation, and My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy are all classics. I'd even put MBDTF up there with Nas's Illmatic. Lyrically, nothing can touch Illmatic, but Kanye's stuff is great theme wise and his production can't really be beat.

"Runaway" from MBDTF

"Family Business" from College Dropout

"Diamonds from Sierra Leone" from Late Registration

"Everything I Am" from Graduation

Too bad he cant freestyle and his beats and raps are canned as beans.

I'm constantly amazed that Jay-z has anything to do with him(which lets be real is his only thread to that world).

sorry Kanye hater here.

Talib Kweli and Mos Def still killin it tho.

Talib kweli, sonz of man, wu, murz, hieroglyphic, old jay-z... That's where it was at man. Miss good hip hop for sure. A good friend of mine Fuzz Jackson(local guy from NC) make some great stuff too. Grew up skateboarding with him.. His music is on point(IamFJ - The Official Web Site of Fuzz Jaxx)!

Who cares if he can't freestyle? Nobody really even freestyles anymore, they all write their shit before.

Kanye did get big because of Jay-Z, but he has been thr biggest name in hip-hop, and even just music, for like the past 5 years.

"Beats and raps canned as beans" I'm not even sure what that means, but he's pretty much the best producer out there.

i don't consider what kanye does as hip hop personally, it's more like hip pop.

Dafuq happened? This thread was going swell with some great shit, now I come back and y'all are talking about Kanye West?

Kanye West is a prime example of why I started this thread - to find stuff to get away from that shit.
