I'm talking about shit like this
Biggie & Raekwon - Still Strugglin - YouTube Talking about real social/economic issues, etc. I'm tired of hearing about mansions, Hennessy, and bullshit. There's gotta be some real shit still out there, but I can't find it. Please, help an old man out whose lost touch with the real shit

You know... My parents ask what happened to real music back when I was a kid and these artist were popular. Then they'd tell me about Billy Holiday, The temptations, and a bunch of people I read about in history books. My reply was... "Nothing happened, you just got old."

Quick reply, but I'd like to say that save for a few spots every now and then, Biggie was largely apolitical at the very most. I feel like Bad Boy has pretty much always been a pop label, and most of Biggies material is without irony - about the usual soulless trappings that make most modern hip hop so meaningless. I feel like that subject matter is even a little racist and detrimental towards the black community as a whole with the caraciture like gangster attitudes and lifestyles portrayed within. Modern rap is infinitely worse too.
I feel like the 90's definitely hit some peaks and special times that just haven't been really been often matched since. All that said, I'm also a MASSIVE 2Pac fan and will gladly back it up...

Look into Kendrick Lamar. Checkout his older mixtapes and his newly released debut album. Great beats and lyricism not to mention real subject matter.
