I would imagine its the curved length between the widest points from the nose to tail.
so a board with blunt nose and tail and smaller radius side cut would have longer effective edge than a board with regular nose and tail with bigger radius side cut at the same length.

effective edge ? what do the numbers mean ?
I have a a question about board specs , what do the numbers mean for effective edge ? Ex I have a 2011 gnu carbon credit and the effective edge is 119mm trying to figure out what it means ...my I just ordered a Lib. Tech T Rice pro 155cm and has the same effective edge being a 1cm difference on the board Length ..it maybe a stupid question but I'm curious I would appreciate some feed back ... Thank you ...1 more question is there a difference in a 2011 BTX on a gnu CC to a 2014 Gnu CC ? According to EVO.com one the 11' is a rocker where as 14' is listed as camber / rocker / camber ...to me It looks like the 2011 is the same as the 2014 am I am idiot or do they have there facts messed up ?
