STR8SHOOTR I grew up surfing. Still do very often. But big wave surfing seen in the Mavericks vid is something totally different. They are a different breed of surfer. Wipe out, be held under for minutes, being tossed and pounded on the bottom. Life and death shit. No thanks, I'll stick with 8 foot and under.

snowklinger The Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau is about to run. I wonder if it will get streamed.

So much heavy surf right now during the pro break, they need to turn the cameras back on....

edit. looks like the swell will not arrive till later in the afternoon....

deagol I have tried surfing once, but would never describe myself as a surfer. Having said that, I try to snowboard with a surfing inspired style and not a skateboarding inspired style..

I also do whitewater canoeing and can, on occasion, surf a standing wave in a river. Not the same as surfing, but still challenging and fun. I've done wakeboarding a few times.

I saw the film RIDING GIANTS several years ago and it blew my mind...

amazing sport.

My husband is not the best swimmer & he had the time of his life picking up surfing. We were at a low key beach, rarely was the water over his head but we could still catch waves with longboards... you spend your time hanging on to a massive flotation device so not too difficult even with less than stellar swimming... wetsuit seems like it helps u float a bit too.
