Goggles or Shades w/ Helmet?

Story goes... been snowboarding 8 years now, never wore a helmet or goggles, just wore my pair of Oakley Shades...

Luckily in that time I've only suffered one mild concussion. Getting older now and expecting my 1st kid so wanting to stay protected so I'm still around for my kid... ANYHOW

Gonna get a helmet, looking at Smith Optic's Vantage (Good Choice?) and also looking at goggles... do I really need goggles? Or could I still use my shades w/ my helmet? Haven't found a pair of goggles I like yet, so thought I'd ask.

EDIT: Also, looking for gloves somewhat like my liners, no bulk, but decent warmth. Love having the dexterity of my fingers to grab my board, mp3 player, etc. Saw the Grenades, but unsure about em.
