How can I tell if my core is rotting?

I had some edge damage a while ago where the rail slightly separated from the base. When I squeezed the area I could see a tiny bit of water bubble out. Anyway the repair shop guy said he would dry it overnight and then proceed with the repair via ptex. I'm just wondering in case the repair was not done properly or doesn't hold up, how can I tell if my core is rotting?

(The repair was to straighten a dented edge. He cut out the base area next to the edge, hammered it out, then sealed the area with ptex.)
