That's actually where I got the K2 lifelike, but for an additional 25% last week.

I wanted the Machete, but they only have a 153 which is too small. I considered the Slayblade but figured that is too much board for him at this point.

schmitty34 Thanks for all the thoughts on this guys.

My initial thought was to have him pick out the board himself with my help, but his wife really wanted to surprise him.

I ended up finding a 2012 K2 Lifelike for a really good deal so I had his wife pull the trigger. At $210 brand new, I figured we couldn't do much better, and he can return the board if he thinks he'd rather have something else. Plus, it was so cheap he will feel better about getting new bindings which I think he'll need.

I was leaning towards a 2013 Raygun until I found the deal on the lifelike.

I am hopeful that the flat camber will be real stable and allow him to progress while still being more floaty in powder than his old camber board.

gstboy Best thing would be to give him a gift card or find a shop with competent staff that will help him pick out the right board.

Think about it, if your friend and his wife bought you a brand new board without knowing your tastes and riding style you would be at the store exchanging it for something else pretty quick.

snowklinger Can't go wrong with a Flow Era or Drifter nice boards under your budget with alot of tech.

If u can find a last year NS SL or Heritage that would be nice too.

Agree with dropping the Crapita off the list.

Triple8Sol Since he's an old school rider, stick to a brand he would know, local would be even better. Nothing too soft as he's prob used to riding long/wide/stiff cambered decks, but also not too stiff since he's a rusty intermediate. So maybe something like a Ride Machete, K2 Turbo Dream, Lib Phoenix (Lynn or Lando), Gnu RC.

schmitty34 I'm also considering the Slayblade? I found a good price on last year's model.

I've read good things about the board, but I am wondering if it may be too aggressive for his level/style.

schmitty34 I like the Turbo Dream, but too much.

Funny thing about the Gullwing, he borrowed that from another friend of mine which sparked the conversation that led to his wife wanting to buy him a new board. Price is a little high, but maybe.

I did find a good price on the Machete, but the sizes were wrong. I'll keep looking.

thanks guys!
12-11-2012 02:02 PM look at the ride machete as an option too. similar characteristics as the raygun.
Could be had for under $300 for last years model.
