Does a diamond stone need a guide?

I've always just tuned my board with a basic file and guide but was thinking abot picking up some new tools.

My understanding is that you should use a file first in a guide to set a bevel and to make a "coarse" adjustment and then use the diamond stone after that to polish, deburr and resharpen the edges when needed (i.e. only use the file occasionally as it takes off a lot more edge material).

Do you need to use the Diamond stone in a guide too in order to maintain the correct bevel? Most tuning tool companies seem to suggest you guide the diamond stone just by hand but it seems to me like that could tweak the bevel.
