snowklinger I run Samsung HD's in raid stripe for performance instead of mirror, they have been going great for about 4 years.

3 TB is just too big...asking for it imo.

Donutz With the SATA drives, you can get an external bay that you can just drop a drive into. Connects through USB. You can buy multiple smaller drives (they're dirt cheap these days) and use them for backups. Because they're not running once you pop and shelve them, the mtbf doesn't apply.

jtg Drives will fail regardless of power supply, you've just been lucky. Especially portable drives.

A better option would be to configure a RAID setup that automatically mirrors everything. You can get enclosures that do this for you if you aren't comfortable setting it up yourself. You want something that does RAID1 (not 0 or 5). The downside is you have to spend twice as much on drives.

speedjason my suggestion. get good power supply. I never skim on power supplies. never had hard drive failures. I've had computers for 16 years been through a lot of hard drives. not one failed.

WD Hard Drive failures.

Well, i know drives fail, and i expect that, but i am having a real bad run of luck right now...!!!

4 weeks ago, i had my 3tb WD drive fail with my iTunes library on it, 2.4tb of music and film...!!! Was backed up on a different drive at my mums, and managed to copy back to a different drive while only losing a few albums and couple of films, dealt with that very easily...

Then today, i had a 500gb portable WD drive fail... This was/is very painful, as it has ALL the seasons snowboard videos, and as i hadn't imported into my movie editing yet, i may of lost the lot...!!!

Running Data Recovery 3 as we speak to see just how much i can get of the drive, and hoping it will be most if not all of it...

I am anal about backing everything up, but this drive for some reason, i had not done...

God it hurts...!!! My stepson is gutted as it is all the video we go through to make his season edit, and he loves doing this when the snow has gone... On the flip side, he wants to go snowboarding everyday now so we can make lots more... Haha
