Depending on the finances I could always do a few resorts for a month each.
Hiring a place for three months would be a lot easier though! I also like the idea of getting to know the community which is better when you're there longer.

Fernie, WW and Revy are all great resorts with really good advanced terrain, but are lacking many of the family friendly features you will find at the Okanagan Resorts. Big White, Sunpeaks, Silver Star and Apex all have great terrain as well but also have lots more to do than just snowboarding. They all have a village with day cares, shopping, skating rinks, cross country trails, tube rides, snowmobile tours, sleigh rides all kinds of shit to keep kids from getting too bored.
I lived at Biggie for 5 years and rode with a pass for another 8 after that, trust me you will not get bored of the terrain. Plus BW is 100% ski in/out which is really nice.
I'd say Revy all the way for any rider, but for families I think Biggie and Sun Peaks would be your best bet.

This thread is a few months old so the decision has likely already been made... But, may as well throw in my two cents anyways!
I would definitely go with Kelowna/Vernon. Revy, Golden, Nelson are all great places to shred but you are going to be there for 3 MONTHS with your family, so I am assuming you are not just going to snowboard all day every day and then pack it in at night. In the Okanagan there is just so much to do, and if you are ok with a generally entitled population I think the entire experience will be so much better.
My background: Lived in Kelowna for 2 years and Vernon for 2 years, also have been to all the aforementioned towns (with the exception of Nelson).
Also, I sound like I'm shaking a stick at Okanagan resorts, when in fact Big White and Silver Star are a couple of my favourite places to ride. Big White especially, there is such a huge variety of terrain you can easily find stuff that is advanced like Revy/KH or easy for the mellow family runs...
A hardcore boarder would recommend Golden, Revy, Nelson, etc., but if you are looking for simply an enjoyable holiday where you'll get an excellent rounded experience, can't see why you wouldn't choose the Okanagan.

Given your specific requirements I would say Fernie or Revelstoke.
Ferine has an epic town feel. It is one of my favourite towns ever. I love the restaurants, shops, local people. With that said I am a chill pub kind of guy, not really the crazy party type (guessing neither are you). The snowboarding is solid. The one downside is more rain at the head and tail of the season.
Revelstoke .. epic snow, awesome backcountry. Proximity to Kicking Horse if you want a resort change. Down sides (or upside) the road in/out is frequently closed because of avalanche danger/work. Food is decent.
Personally I would pick Revy.

My wife and I are moving to Nelson at the end of the month. Just bought my pass to WW yesterday
Let me know if you end up that way

Yeah only really had a couple of powder days in almost 3 months at Red. A little disappointing but I was quite crap back then so it would have been wasted!
Just bought a house so the long term plan is ticking along

|knoxious||I also spent a season at Red - I have a LOT of love for that hill and town... Nelson has way more going on for a family vibe. And WW gets more snow|
