killclimbz Well sadly it looks like the ski train is not going to happen. Not sure if Amtrack has a point or if they are just being douches. My guess is the latter. Pacific Holdings says they will try to get the service up and running later this season, but I think it's probably done for this season at least. I wouldn't be surprised if this puts the brakes on the ski train for a good number of years before someone else gives it a go. Pretty lame.

killclimbz The main reason Berthoud Ski Area went under was the lodge. I guess the plumbing, specifically the drainage was a huge problem there. Which is weird, being on top of a pass and all. Anyway, they could never get the problems fixed. Evidently the Sol Vista owners spent upwards of $300k on it and never got the results they needed.

If Sol Vista hadn't of stepped in Bert would have never re opened as a ski area. The guy who spent all the money on getting operational after the early 90's closure died in a car wreck driving home from the pass. They stepped in, got it running, and would have been successful except for the fact that the year they started operating was the first year of the pass wars. People weren't paying for Bert when they could get a season pass for $200 at Winterpark, Breck, Keystone, Coppper, etc. Bert was charging $400 for their pass which was cheap, the season previous...

mallrat That's good to hear. That mountin was always so much fun and some great skiers and boarders. Was never a fan of tele's but watching Ross was just nuts. Always a great vibe on that mountain.

It's almost like the mountain needed a rich investor who didn't mind losing money to buy it but then Sol Vista did (the year I left) and I understand it all went down hill.

Good to see Winter Park has started to understand what needed to be done to become more profitable though. There's so many fun unknown parts of that mountain.

killclimbz It's sad what happened to Berthoud but the place has also never been better. They tore down the old lodge which was a bummer. There is now a shelter that has been built with radiant heat floors and bathrooms. It's great for putting your skins, boots on, and eating lunch.

mallrat I used to live in Winter Park (about 3 years). That ski train was always great for business up there. Hope they figure things out.

Sad to hear what ended up happening to Berthoud as well. Sounds like the County has undergone a LOT of changes from when I was there (1998-2001). I'll always love that mountain and town, such a great atmosphere.

daysailer1 The Ski Train did overnight packages last season. They were advertised on the Winter Park website as well as the trains website.

The Rio Grande Ski Train website now has its information up. They are doing some great stuff.

killclimbz More info on the ski train. I like what they are doing. Allowing for overnight trips and such. I had really thought that the ski train had missed out on that part of the business. It also looks like Winterpark is getting a bit more behind it this time around. Maybe they realized what a boost the ski train was to their bottom line over the years.
