also, you will pay state income tax on any income earned in Ca, even if you don't live here, in case you were thinking of that option.

If you're aiming to teach at a college level, I guess the best bet in the region is the community colleges or the University of Nevada, Reno (though I guess the latter, they look for phD's).
If costs were out of the question, there is absolutely no doubt I'd rather live on the California side. All the CA side cities are nice... Truckee, King's Beach, South Lake Tahoe, etc. Most of the Nevada side cities are kind of trashy. A lot of them are just infrastructure to support the aging, dusty casinos.
Incline Village isn't so trashy, but it's a small town, and it's a bit of a drive to get anywhere. I think Reno is like 40 min away (driving over Mt. Rose summit). You have to drive around the North side of the Lake to get to the North Lake resorts (Squaw, Alpine, Northstar), which takes time. Mt. Rose is the nearest resort.
I do agree with everyone else though... unless you're only into park, Northstar isn't all that exciting.
If you'd accept CA cities, basically the two big cities are Truckee and South Lake Tahoe. Truckee is around 20 min drive to 5 resorts (Boreal (park), Sugarbowl, Squaw, Alpine, Northstar). South Lake Tahoe is at the doorstep of Heavenly, 30 min. to Sierra, and 50 min to Kirkwood. Next year the Epic pass will be good or Heavenly and Kirkwood (and Northstar).

|kctahoe||Depending on how the economy is in five years reno is horrible. It took my cousin about 6-8 months to find a teaching job in Reno, granted it was elementy school, i dont know about high school. But i beleive Nevada has the worst unempolyment in the country as of right now. Thers lots of places to live outside of Sacramento and still commute to sac for a job. Like folsom or farhter north placerville, Sac is about 30-45 min form these places, and SLT is about an hour from there. On the northern side there are 3 or 4 smaller cities all within 30 min from sac and about an hour to an hour and a half to tahoe.I think you would have a better chance finding a job in CA its just a lot more expensive. But as far as anything close to tahoe it will be very hard to find steady employment, but like everybody said why are you set on Northstar? I rode Northstar for years and this year got a Alpine/Squaw pass and it really openned my eyes, Northstar doesnt have shit comapred to others places terrain wise, now park they are one of the best. But Heavenly and sierra both have great parks too and much better terrain, same with squaw on the northshore.|

Yes, the Union of Soviet Socialist Californians make it a bit expensive to live here, but honestly, it isn't that bad. Yes the state tax is about 8% give or take, compared to Nevada's 0% income tax. And sales tax. But Sacramento is about the largest city near Tahoe, and you don't have to live in Sacramento. I'd have to imagine there would be more teaching opportunities there.
Northstar. Meh. I agree with killz, they probably have the better park in the area, but as for the rest of the mountain, we rode it all by Noon with the large crowds.
We have a trip up there in two weeks, 2.5 days at alpine and squaw. Let's see what all this fuss is about.

|killclimbz||Why Northstar anyway? Out of all the world class resorts in Tahoe, Northstar is not one of them. Seriously, it's pretty dumpy. Well in a ritzy way. Really nice base area and all, but the terrain is less than exciting. Squaw, Kirkwood, Sugar Bowl, Alpine, beat it all to shit. If you are going for park, then you should seriously consider moving to Summit County Colorado, or Park City in Utah, or Mammoth. Much better park action at those spots.|

|ThunderChunky||Ya, I was actually thinking of transferring but I'd get no financial aid. It's worth staying here for therest anyway. I don't think I'd be able to teach at Seirra Nevada until I got a few years of high school teaching under my belt. But hey idk.|

|ThunderChunky||I am mainly shooting for Northstar. I would move into Cali if had too, just haven't heard to many good things about it.|
