|SnowOwl||Can you be more specific as to where the pain is? Is it your muscle or the spine/disks? My guess....it's a tweaked nerve. When you're sleeping, your body actually loosens and relaxes since your muscles aren't constantly flexing, and the lying down position is no longer forcing gravity to put stress on your spine, so at those wee hours before you wake up, that's obviously the most relaxed your body has become and as a result your nerve is getting aggrivated since your body is re-aligning, a position you haven't been used to. This can all be a result of bad posture putting something out of place and continuing your life syle without addressing the problem, making your body develop improperly around the aggrevated area. But sedentary (sitting down)life styles do put a ton of stress on your back. Putting your body in the sitting position alone puts 40% more pressure on the spine. Try a medicine ball at work. It will help decrease the amount of pressure applied to your spine, and will force you to be actively aware of your posture. Have you done anything new in your exercise routine? Different type of running? If so try stretching out your hamstrings before sleeping, they're connected to your lower back, so when they're tight you'll get a tight cramping feeling in your lower back. It's hard to say without more info. Buy a foam roal. It will become your best friend. trust me. Not the soft mushy crap kind. Get the black one.|

Go and get a remedial massage, if for no other reason than to learn exactly what muscles are the ones that give you trouble, you will know which ones cause you will hit the roof when they massage them.
Then its a matter of stretching to keep them from pulling tight and aching. Yoga will be awesome for that.

BEDS. Yeah, that's what I'm thinking too. My current bed/mattress is pushing 10 years now (I think).

Any changes in body weight (i.e. are you getting fat?)? Cause I read that can cause back pain.
Otherwise try flipping your mattress. It probably won't do shit but it's free so it could be worth a try.

|Casual||If you have no previous back injuries, you do not experience back pain during the day and are not doing activities that cause back pain... get a new bed.|
