Snow2k Quick update:

While I was still able to get some decent footage my first time out, I had a few issues. First off, the locking mechanism for the tripod adapter flat out sucks. It loosens up after minutes! The tilt adjuster could be even worse. Even when it is all the way tight, it will allow for movement. Now, that being said, when going down a mellow groomer, I had no issues with it tilting out of angle at all. I have yet to take it on any bumpier runs so I guess we'll see how that goes.

I'm going to look at using a different lock nut to secure it better in the future.

I was really pleased with how the camera and pole fit in my camelbak zoid even with the bladder half full without me having to detach it .

Snow2k Well, I got the XShot in mail quicker than I expected. I see what you're saying zeeden about its sturdiness when fully extended. In the short time I've had with it, I think I've found a sweet spot that's just short of full length. Feels like it will hold up better at a little shorter length.

As far as the DIY route, I've made a full cockpit for Gran Turismo 5 so, I have nothing against making things on my own . The fact that it retracts is just such a big deal in my book. I can switch from pole to helmet view whenever and just tuck it away in my bag. I'm really pleased by how short it retracts. Its just a tad longer than my DirectTV remote which is perfect.

The XShot does address the rotation issue from the camera's weight by adding notches down the sides of the pole. For some reason, it feels like I may have problems down the road with it.

I'll take pics of it soon and post em up.

Donutz I bought the cheapest wood hockey stick I could find, cut it to length, drilled a hole at one end, got a bolt the same size as the standard camera mount, et voila! Works fine.

mojo maestro Why not grab a discarded or broken ski pole at the hill? Sure it's not retractable, but it costs nada and probably sturdier.

03SVTCobra I made a couple poles with some pvc pipe. Used the gopro tripod mount. I think it all cost less than $10. You can use a threaded pvc coupler to make extendable so I have two pieces that connect together if I want to go from a small handgrip pole to a 24 inch.

zeeden I used the xshot before. Its not as strong as I thought it would be fully extended. It ended up breaking on me.

Snow2k Amazon lists the shipping weight at 7.7 ounces. I think I'll buy one and test it out also.

I'm a little worried about the rotation but we'll see I guess.
