Plus, go to consruction sites and ask for a couple pieces of anyt ype of wood you have, make friends with the super and eventually they might start setting aside some stuff for you. That's what my work partner does... it helps that we go to these sites and do work for them though...|

Depending on zoning laws, you could always go with a yurt. These things are sweet. I saw them at a sustainability event a few years back and fell in love with them. It is actually one of my goals in life to by some property near a proper mountain out west at some point and get one of these things built on the land. They are fairly inexpensive and believe it or not, are absolutely huge inside. The base price for the largest model is around 10 grand so they are definitely affordable. I think most people go the trailer route due to zoning laws.
I've looked in to this myself and found that most townships have a 500 square foot minimum for land owners looking to build a permanent housing structure on unimproved ground. Then you also have to consider other codes, like mandatory septic, well water, or even electric utility hookup. This could drive your costs way up.
I think going the trailer route is a perfectly acceptable way to go. Again check with the township zoning department to make sure you can get the appropriate permits to park a trailer, but it should prove to be a lot easier and less costly then going the conventional route.
You can actually buy plans to build your own tiny home on a trailer.

Estimated cost to build yourself is around 20k, but if you search around people have built them for much less by using recycled materials and craigslist.

A - frame or cottage plans?
Ok sorry to post this in these forums, but I figured that MANY of you are back country high country based people that probably know a thing or two or twelve about this topic!
Im was interested in buying something in our hills, but everything I've looked at is a trailer on a piece of land.
If it is made from wood, it's outrageous.
The land I've found so far is like 20k for several acres. Some with views of our local resort.
I can find cheaper with less of a view, less land etc.
The problem is, I can't really find a company that sells wood packages or prefab A-frames that isn't charging an arm and a leg.
I really didnt want to go the plan route. I looked around for a shed and the size I wanted, all these places wanted like 7k for the wood package and plans...for a shed! I built something twice as nice from tongue/groove pine that looks like a mini cabin for a fraction of the price using plans. But, it was a pain sourcing some of the materials and working from unproven plans.
So if anyone has knowledge of this, Id appreciate a PM or even a post in here about how I can build my ride retreat only moments from my resort.
