linvillegorge Tough to find a diehard, experienced skier that hasn't had their knees carved on by a surgeon or two. That's all the motivation I need to stay off the damn things.

I've just barely avoided knee surgeries a couple of times already. My knees don't need any help destroying themselves.

Stopping will be exactly the same. I doubt the length will matter that much if you have a lot of hockey stop experience, just commit. You'll also find that becoming comfortable with how wedge shapes control speed is useful (particularly if you get behind some huge group of slowbies on a flat area and don't want to blow your speed by hockey stopping). I mean, you can skate on skis and it's kind of fun, but way easier to carry momentum. As for actual parallel turns it'll probably just depend. It won't hurt to tell the instructor that you have ice skating experience since they do tend to be pretty similar.

ThunderChunky Didn't end up going today. I am going Monday instead. I can ice skate extremely well. It's pretty much the same thing except for the surface area right? Obviously the tips of the skis and length make it different but same thing for turning and stopping the same as hockey stopping.

Also try getting your knees into it when you pickup speed, when I was young i was amazed how using my knees to lean and put weight on made it so easy to turn, especially carve

Justin to turn pick up your inside foot and put most of your weight on the outside leg. if you want to turn left and put your weight on your right ski.

Same as snowboarding make sure to unweight/pop when turning.

KBNYY Keep your weight mostly centered, but you'd rather have forward than back, just in case you catch some unexpected air.

EatMyTracers Tried skiing once and it was awful although it is a lot easier than snowboarding.
