grafta Had good luck getting new padding for my protec helmet. I emailed them asking for replacement and they sent some out to me for nothing.

vltsai As far as replacing helmets is concerned, it is my understanding that the foam degrades and at 3-4 years you're looking at a pretty structurally compromised helmet. It'll protect you from small hits but a big hit with an older helmet...not so much. So I'd probably say every few years pick up a new one. If you're got any reason to question whether or not you should (from a hit), check the foam and if you've hit hard enough to crack the foam or the shell even a little bit, dump that ish. If not, you're probably okay for the time being, but definitely consider. You can never really check the whole helmet for cracks anyway.

If you hit your head (with your helmet on) hard enough where you thought "I'd have been so fk'd if I didn't have my helmet" give it a good once-over to make sure it isn't boned.

You can see if Giro will provide you some extra pads - for my bike helmets, they've always come with some extra padding that you can stick inside (adhesive) and help shim the helmet a little bit if your head isn't shaped perfectly for it.

It's my understanding that you should replace any helmet that's taken a "Significant" impact! Although, I'm not really sure what constitutes "Significant!".

Can't help wondering myself just how hard an impact is necessary to compromise the protection afforded by a helmet? I've fallen a few times and "popped" my noggin against the hard pack hard enough to give me a moderate headache afterwards, (...even a little mild whiplash type pain in the neck once or twice!) ...but nothing sever enough to cause seeing stars or losing consciousness afterward.

I would be interested in knowing myself just what level/type severity of impact would be enough before you seriously consider replacing a helmet?

New helmet padding?

Hey guys. I have a Giro G10 and am looking to replace the padding on it. They're pretty thin and removable by velcro. It fits a little loose so I'm looking for something a bit thicker. Can't seem to find anything online besides generic bicycle helmet replacement pads. Help?

Also, on a semi-related note, when is the time to get a new helmet? Do you only get a new one when you've cracked it through?
