Fernie on the other hand I could buy about the equivalent house for the price, and it really would be an amazing place to setup camp for a long time. I just can't get over the taxes, fuel costs, and on and on.

Yep, phase 1 is unlimited use, phase 2 is limited owner use in Whistler.
Honestly, rent isn't that bad in Whistler. Come in the summer and there are plenty of long leases available for decent prices. As long as you aren't trying to find a place to rent in the middle of winter peak season the rental rates aren't that bad.
As far as IT jobs go, as already mentioned both Whistler Blackcomb and Whistler tourist have IT departments. I'm sure Squamish has some IT departments too.
Besides that, most of the other businesses are either tourism, service or commercial things like house builders and construction, but you do see the odd opening for other jobs like accountants and dentists every once in awhile.
I'm sure Canmore is nice, but if you like Whistler it's honestly hard to find a place quite like it. I live here because I haven't found any other ski resort where you have amazing ski terrain mixed with such a kickass village. As much as I like small ski towns, I still like having really nice restaurants, bars, pubs and cinemas right inside the village.
Plus the drive to Vancouver is really easy on the odd occasion when you need to get out of the bubble.

|Donutz||The condos in Whistler are phase I or phase II. Can't remember which is which, but one of them is only useful as an investment because you're only allowed to use it a certain number of weeks per year. No, it's not a timeshare. The rest of the time the property mgmt company is allowed to rent it out (you get, I think, 60% of the rent). What'll kill you is the maintenance fee, which can be up to $500 A MONTH. Condos outside of town are more reasonable (and I mean short bus ride).|

I'm paying exactly half the rent (although utilities are a bit more here) than I was paying in downtown Vancouver.
Pemberton is the same distance to Whistler (30km) as Canmore to Banff.
You're already living closer to a mountain now, might as well go big if you're making the move.

|ARSENALFAN||You should go online and check out Canmore, Alberta. Doesn't get any better than that and I think the rent would be cheaper than Whistler. Its the bomb.|
