CheeseForSteeze I did greek parties in college and I couldn't have survived without CDJs. All drunk college kids wanted to hear were club bangers anyway, cause they're just trying to get pussy. It was easy to bring 2 x 6 copies of MP3 CDs and an excel spreadsheet with titles, BPM and keys. But yea, REAL turntablism and controllerism are hugely respectable.

Madeon's pop mashup is a standout example to me of how controllers, Ableton and lots of intimate knowledge of your music combine in totally new ways in live performance.

ShredLife mpcs and to some extent ableton controllers and the like are cool when played live well but cdjs are gayer than my avatar. always have been, always will be - nothing anyone can say will ever change that. turntablism ftw.

stan_darsh learning to properly use decks is a good move, man!

real djing will never die. i live in new mexico, but run a vinyl/dubplate only night in san diego... no cds, no laptops.

So here's everything. I'm waiting for my Odyssey table to come in so I can actually mix at waist height :/ It's getting annoying because I can't turn the tables 90 (that entertainment stand is too shallow) and I keep bumping the tone arms.

I'll never get rid of this setup (even got that Macbook Pro Retina just for running Serato, Ableton and Traktor). This is dedicated to learning the art of turntablism. However, I'm sure this controllerism movement is going to overtake everything because it really does bend the line between live performance and playing recorded music; I'm thinking there's just a LOT more homework involved than traditional DJing though so a regular setup will always have a use.

Yea, I know how much mobile PA stuff can cost. I used to work on a committee that set up mobile systems and lights for events at my college, provide DJ services etc. We had to be scale-able but we had some damned loud stuff for a small committee. We got a $10k annual operating budget but we could request capital funds to purchase more gear and they basically never questioned what our director put down. The sound guys would always be arguing with the light nerds as to what we needed but we ended up getting everything in the end.

When I left we had 4 Crown XTi 4000s to push a pair of JBL SRX728s (bridged) and 738s, 2 older Crown CE 4000s for two single JBL Pro 18s and that alone was so incredibly loud it even worked for small outdoor stuff. I'm sure they've doubled their capacity since then.

I hugely recommend dBx drive racks for all-in-one preamps, Crown amplifiers and JBL cabinets. I never had any problems in all my years working with them. Throw those things in some good Pelican amp racks and you have nothing to worry about. I could get hold of my old director and get the contact information for the distributor we purchased from; you might be able to save some $$.

Lol. The dubstep and trap type music is getting more popular though and you can definitely work in a few tracks, but I still like house, tech house and hip hop the most. I like to keep a good variety going.

It's funny because so many DJs don't even bring decks anymore. I saw a tech-trance-ish kind of guy last night and a chick playing DnB with a tiny bit of real jungle thrown in and both were just using a laptop, 4 channel mixer and what looked like a big queue-pad in the same vein as a Novation. I talked to the tech-trance guy after the show and he actually plays all original music so he has access to all the stems and he just programs songs live and does everything in Ableton Live. I think that's the way DJing is moving but only for certain styles of music.

Kevin137 Have you guys ever heard of a guy called DJ EZ...???

The bloke is soooooo quick with what he does, i have never seen anyone on decks like him, i used to do some concert and club photography and worked with him more than a few times, and i was always in awe of what he could do with a pair of cdj's and a mixer...

Look him up, him and a a DJ called Dj Terry Marks... Different but both awesome...
