I'm from Long Island NY, about 7 hours away from Jay Peak, We went last year but got rained out the week before. All of their natural snow melted; random January warm spell plus rain. When is the best time to actually make it there to have bountiful amounts of powder?

They get about 375" per season, that's almost as much as Big Sky and Whistler
this is a very misleading statement that makes a false comparison.

pretty sure the only reason anybody rides the east coast is because they live there or get paid for a contest. never been, never plan on going, ill admit that up front. hey even crap snow is better that no snow right? hell i've ridden some pretty piss poor overglorified corn fields in the midwest just sayin...

Agree'ed crap snow is better than ice or no snow.

Please explain how its misleading if you have yet to go there.....If you look at snowfall yearly avg for jay its 375" while Big Sky is 400" and whistler is 401". Mean while snow to rain ratio at jay is 30:1 and due to the way that the weather treks across northern vermont and across the vermont/canadian boarder once it hits Jay peak it causes major up-sloping causing the storms to cycle over the peak itself.

the east might be crunchy as a mother fucker but we have our gems and jay is one of them.

i just think that comparing snowfall amounts between whistler and jay peak seems like a misleading way to use one to understand the other.

i dont mind being wrong i just imagine that they arent very similar in any way.

HOWEVER i bet riding when u guys get those big ass dumps that shut the whole coast down for 3 weeks is pretty fuckin awesome!

Comparing snowfall is very valid, comparing vertical drop to terrain grade/steepness or length of runs, not at all. If 3" of snowfalls in Vermont or 3" of snow falls in Colorado its still 3 inches. Making a correlation between types of snow is different.

Jay get a 30:1 ratio of snow:rain (30"snow : 1" rain) that's champaign super powder and the only reason why they get that is from the up-slopping; they get the most snow on the east coast. Its like how Sierra's get MEGA dumps of 700" a season, the storms from the west coast get pushed to higher and higher altitudes super cooling the storm and causing it to snow epic amounts.... but since jay doesn't have the Pacific they have the great lakes that they suck the moisture from and keep getting sent to higher altitude till it hits Jay which is one of the highest elevation (4,000ft) besides Mt Washington (in New Hampshire, 6,300ft)

jay is magic

When Jay peak gets snow it is feak'n great! BUT it doesn't happen all the time, id say your best bet is end of feb or first week of march. 2 seasons ago first week of march 60+" in 2 days!!!! the trees were magic. Bring supplies and good base layers cuz it gets cold on top!

Any word on Jay Peak opening day? Didn't find anything on their website.

Also is it worth it to go early? Any glades? Any ideas?

I had a blast there last year, I live in Lowell, Ma. Never even seen real glades before going up there.. Almost killed myself on multiple occasions, but was awesome at the same time. Bringing the go pro with me this year.

There not the best on informing people on there website besides up and coming weather....facebook them, but killington seems to be the only mountain that really open. I was there last Sunday, spring conditions.

BTW Jay you want to hit up later Jan/Feb for some good powder

Haha... Thnx! I'm guessing it's bad everywhere. Have not been to Tremblant once yet (I usually go every w/e) even though they have 70% trails open due to lack of snow.
Spring conditions I don't mind. Ice is what I hate, but will live with if must be.
I see Northway, Montrealer & Upper goat run are open! Should be fun! Are these trails in good shape?
Worst case... we got the water park to enjoy.
Cheers...

i was there until christmas eve last week; if it wasn't for the instructors giving out lessons it would've been so bust but they were pretty chill and my buddies and i picked up a new bag of tricks. it was a good way to kill time for sure. on our last day it snowed and they finally opened up the flyer quad. we were maybe the first few groups on the run and it was amazing, though after 5-6 runs things started going to shit due to people traffic. by the end of that day we saw them breaking out the aerial tram and cleaning it up. such a tease...

the instructors we chilled and rode with were awesome people and made up for the lack of snow. they said they've noticed that whenever the season started late in the past, that they'd usually run late into spring as a result (one of them told me they remained open through may last year). so hopefully that's true...

i have a few friends driving up for presidents' day weekend from new york city, but unfortunately i won't be able to join them until saturday night (riding sunday/monday). my original plan was to fly into burlington saturday night and have them pick me up, but it'd really be asking a lot for them to essentially go 4 hours back and forth after a day of riding.

is there a way for me to get from burlington airport to jay peak or at least to some other town closer by? i checked greyhound but they have nothing, amtrak has service to st. albans (with ground transportation to jay peak for which i've found no details for) but it doesn't seem to coincide with my flight.

i tried calling their desk for information but they sounded very impatient/rude and just replied with a simple, "no."

damn man, that sucks. like i said, i'd be willing to take whatever amtrak, greyhound, shuttle, etc. that's available to a closer village/town so the pickup won't be as bad for my friends. oh well...you can tell how badly i wanna go back up there too as i'm scheming to see what combination of flights, cabs, and trains can get me there (or at least close enough).

and yeah, i know it's closer to 3 hours, but when you get caught behind a slower driver on the back roads it easily stretches to 4 haha. now i just need to negotiate a few favors.
