I grew up just outside of Kingfield, ME. Before it was American Ski Company...Sugarloaf used to basically give away passes to kids in certain school districts. Our ski team trained there too. I think my first Loaf season pass was $67.
That mountain is amazing. Its so hardcore. I was on the mountain one day when it was -22 and the wind chill was -76. Hahaha. Nuts. I guess thats partly why Sunday River gets so much more traffic. Cuz it really is a haul up there. After I moved to NYC I still did loaf weekends and by hour 7 in the car I'd think to myself...shit I shoulda gone to Sunday River. The new expansion will be great for the place. People love glades but the snowfields dont get a ton of use. I'm out in Cali for work basically the rest of the season (this is my first season on a board since 2002) but next season there WILL be a Sugarloaf week. Not a weekend...a week. There will also be at least 2 and maybe 3 Sunday River weekends. 8 days of shredding the Loaf, 3 days at Sunday River... man...that's so awesome. I'm super jealous and super happy for at the same time.

I went to Sunday River last year. LOVED IT. Was supposed to go back this year but couldn't. Looks like I will likely have to wait till next year as I dont have time, or money for that matter, to trip up there before the season ends. Sucks but what am I gonna do

Sunday River local here. Glad you like it! I can't believe that after 14 seasons snowboarding there, I still found new unmarked glades in the pow last Wednesday-Friday.
I'm pretty sure a couple of them are mountain bike trails. Does anyone mountain bike there regularly? I think next season I'll get my hands on a summer mountain bike map so I can hit those up when there's fresh snow. |
