How busy does baker get on weekends lately?

Thinking about making the drive tomorrow to avoid congestion at Seattle area resorts. Is it going to be just as bad?

Don't know the area and have never been there but I'd assume Seattle resorts wouldn't be that busy tomorrow.

They were turning people away by 10 today. I doubt tomorrow will be much better. They're even hosting superbowl events.

Weekends....I don't think I've ever waited more than 5-7 minutes for the line....except for first chair up the hill on a dump day. Was there yesterday, pretty much ride up and get on...maybe a 1-2 minute wait....but if there is a line up, I'll switch chairs or do singles....and generally know where and when there will be lines and will avoid those....there is a predictable rhythm to the chair flow...and know were there are reasonably entertaining lines to drop no matter what the chair.

I was there for the first time yesterday and didn't wait in line ever on any chair. It was pretty decent. Snow gets crusty faster there though.

I didn't hit Canyon. It had a lot of warning signs but seemed like it was only a single black. Is it pretty sketchy in some places?

Also I was kind of left wondering what the Baker hype was about. It's definitely a place I could appreciate, but I can't help but wonder if I missed something. When people are fanatical about Baker, are they actually talking about lift-assisted backcountry? Are the good lines hidden? With the exception of the double black runs (which I'm not good enough for), I think I covered about 85% of what's on the trail map. Am I doing Baker wrong? :D Or maybe it has to be a powder day to really appreciate it?

You were just doing the groomers...may be a tad of fluff in places on boiler plate....Bakes is known for the non groomed....when its not boiler plate. Shit, was the canyon open?...hasn't been yet...damm sorry I missed that....dropping cliff line off gunners....the bowl above the canyon. This year has been shit except for a few pow days. But the coverage is thin...abt 1/2 of what it usually is. So when its deeper and a bit more fluffy...truly the whole place is game....but sadly yesterday would have been just blasting groomers....which is kind of meh...but have been getting my 50mph groomer groove on while dodging the tourist.

edit on a good day come up....follow a loc will open your eyes to the possibilities...groomers are only used to quickly get to the next stash....and back to the chair for moar.

Yeah, they just opened Canyon about halfway through the day right in front of me. I didn't know what it was, but as soon as they dropped the rope everyone got pretty excited. I debated going down but I already had a misadventure just before that, which ended up with me climbing out of a small cliff, so I decided not to go near places with warning signs anymore until I knew the area better :)

It's been a rough season down the rest of the cascades so I know what you mean though. There are cliffs and rocks that I never knew existed from riding last season...terrain looks totally different with the thin coverage.

I'll try again next time there is a weekday dump and I can get away from work. I've been warned not to bother if it's a weekend dump. Still got to ride though, so better than anything else I'd be doing on a Sunday!

It will be busy this weekend since the LBS is going on.

wrathfuldeity 02-09-2014 04:54 AM

Very quiet Fri, Sat not bad...did not wait more than 1-2 minutes 1 or 2 times and Sun probably won't be bad. Certianly less folks than usual on LBS weedin. Did a Jamie Lynn c3 demo...walked right up and out riding under 10min...same with the return. They have a new groomer cat...doing a very good job...was told the teeth are 6" vs the old 4"...big difference in groomed riding...very tourist friendly. Again blasting fast groomers...of course got abit scraped a few places...but easy sugar right there.

Jibfreak 02-11-2014 11:19 AM

How did you like the Lynn c3? I really need to get up to baker... I'm looking at doing a weekday mission sometime soon here.
