Really good dh activities to be had...u will want to do a dual crown full susp, some crash gear and good medical ins...talk to some glac locs...be nice and they might give up the goods...if its not snow season...its dh season
Per Mark Nelson (Portland weather): "Ski areas may see their best snow conditions since Christmas NEXT weekend (Feb 28/Mar 1) But nothing will change for this coming weekend; lots of thin spots down low still. It’s possible some closed ski areas could open up again by the first full weekend of March"
Desperately needing a miracle March, got a non refundable cabin booked the last full week because I thought "Late March, Baker is a surefire bet to be going off" turns out I picked the one year that may not be true. Now the next question is what to do if they aren't even open... Maybe there's some fishing up there?
I feel your pain. My wife and I rented a cabin at Mt. Hood the first week of February while a huge tropical soaker rolled through. We didn't even bother riding; pathetic.
Flying out to Baker this coming Tuesday. Hopefully we get some kinda miracle or even a dusting of snow would be nice. We have a cabin that we're locked into as well that we can't get out of. We're willing to drive within a 4 hour radius to chase snow, however I don't think there is much snow within that radius. Any good golf courses open near glacier or Bellingham?
Yeah, long story short, the ridge that had been giving us the shaft might be moving east, allowing colder air to move in, and more moisture as well. Could be setting up to be a miracle March.
Whistler has a reasonable base and will ride good with freshies... Not sure what else is within a 5 hour radius of glacier, since you're at the end of the road
If you do come up north, I can show you around, and get you "slightly" discounted tix.
Thanks for the great offer, I'll definitely send you a msg if we decide to head north which I think we may just for a day at whistler. I appreciate it!
Just fyi, up yesterday, they had blueberry, austin, northface...chairs 1, 2, and 3 running; icy through out the day with patches of corn when it warmed...still BAD. Also will be news abt LBS...but not for public knowldege yet...will post later. Also tales of low pressure out of gulf of AK...to hit after next weekend...first part of March....FINGERS CROSSED!!!
Thursday is looking good at Baker. Flying out in about 5 hours. Hoping we get the goods on this trip. Thanks for all the help and suggestions from everyone.
ehhh...not really....be prepared for rain/gortex...if we get any...it will be dust on glazed concrete. Temps are still too warm. I'll likely be up there on Sat. in my hot pink pants and black jacket....if ya want yell at me.
I'll be there first week of March and forecast looks decent but also wet and not the good kind. Place is booked, so no turning back, we get what we get. Plus I'll just be coming back from getting stitches out so won't be able to ride crazy anyway.
there are snow patches ... but in years past I got 23k vert in a easy day...this year lucky to hit 5-6k vert
and with patches, dodging rocks...pitiful and can be a bit of a challenge ...btw bring your oldest rock board...its going to get trashed.
lets say we get the magical dump of say 200-300 inches in a 3 week period...it will be difficult to keep access to the hill open, get the hill groomed with the dumpage....and there won't be many folks equipped enough or skilled to ride the dumpage....except for the local bc/avy animals
y'all need to chill out on the numbers. Coming from a country where an epic season is 56" …. its pretty funny seeing people nit picking over base measurements.
Things are looking very different down here. C'mon down we'll shred some pow and drink some beer. Based on our models it looks like we could have between 1-2 feet. Depending on where the wind blows, there could be some deep stashes.
we are not complaining that baker is not ideal. it's literally not rideable in most places. it's dirt, rocks, and bushes. most of the mountain is closed. there are like 2-3 runs open and they're in bad shape.
to put into perspective, as of Feb 15, Mt Baker broke it's previous record for worst snowpack ever, previously set in 1977.
