Dumpage to pile up in the CascadesThis is it. It's really going feel like fall and winter coming up. Blustery, wet and chilly. The weather pattern developing over the North Pacific is conducive to consistent snow accumulation for the Cascades. We are starting a 10 day (possibly more) period of cool & snowy weather. It will be chilly and rainy in the lowlands, but the snow will get deeper in the Cascades every day. There will be occasional dry sunny periods - but cool and wet (mountain snow) will be the character of the upcoming weather pattern.

I see a west northwesterly incoming flow, with one storm after another. Snow level will be low: 2000-3000ft. Expect 4-12" new by late Friday and more snow over the weekend and early next week. Snow level may occasionally bounce upward to 4000ft in the next week, but that will be brief. Overall snow levels will stay low. Next Tuesday and Wednesday show good snowfall with 1-2ft possible. In the next 7-10 days expect a minimum of 2-3ft , but 3-5ft or more is a good possibility.

If the computer weather models aren't too far off, expect the real possibility of some ski slopes opening before or near Thanksgiving weekend.

EDIT-- I forgot to mention, Mt. Baker says that if the storm tracks the way it's predicted, then they could be looking at opening as early as Thursday of next week. So Stoked! Hope it's true! :D

So on top of the possible Baker opening, Crystal Mountain is talking about the possibilty of opening next week as well. The seaon is finally about to kick off! So stoked! Can't wait! :D I'm so ready!

Update: Friday Nov. 11, 2011 morning

After a brief warmup yesterday, the freezing levels are dropping fast at the mountain and it is currently snowing hard all the way down to White Salmon.

This cooling trend with new snow is consistent with the forecast for this coming weekend and next week; the National Weather Service Forecast Office and Northwest Weather & Avalanche Center are calling for significant winter weather to move down from Alaska and the jet stream to bring a series of winter storms to the North Cascades. Freezing levels should drop below 2,500 feet by Saturday with up to 11 inches of snowfall. This is forecasted to be the beginning of a long period of cool and moist northwesterly flow, bringing below normal temperatures and generally wet conditions (snow in the mountains!) all through next week.

If conditions develop as forecasters are predicting, Mt. Baker could POSSIBLY OPEN AS EARLY AS NEXT THURSDAY, NOV. 17th! Stay tuned here or on our snow report phone line for daily updates.

I read that Crystal is trying to open Wed. Baker, Stevens, and Crystal are supposed to get over a foot of fresh Wed and Wed night.

Taking Thursday off for Crystal and heading up to Baker on Sunday!!
