downhill mountain biking

so my buddies are way into downhill mtn biking. they have these bikes with huge motorcycle-sized suspensions on them and they speed down some pretty gnarly stuff. i finally went out and tried it the other day and im hooked. anyone else tried this? after doing it im kinda suprised it isnt more popular

Downhill and Freeride is becoming more and more popular. Many mountains cater to mountain biking and have lift access which is awesome. I have been doing it for the past 5 or so years. Its one of the best sports to do in the summer, but it can get expensive.
Here's a pic of my bike(just sold it):

I actually started snowboarding as crosstraining for downhill mountain biking. Lots of fun, but, yeah, mucho dinero. I stopped a few years ago (too many concussions), but miss it. Here's a pic of me in my last race at Mt Snow:

Kicking Horse, Fernie, and Whistler

Yeah, I've done it a bunch of times. It's just sick. Best places to do it is at resorts during the summer. They have hooks on the back of the chairs and it takes your bike to the top. They also have runs laid out the same as winter (green, blue, black, and double). I've tried out in the woods but a downhill MTB usually weighs 40+ lb's and is around 5 Grand. Better to rent, especially seeing as the chance to break something on it is fairly high. You also get perfectly maintained tabletops, berms, and kickers at these places. But seeing as you shouldn't be sitting down when attacking the trails, your Quads and forearms just burn. In a good way of course.

Ya I'm more into freeriding. I probably spend all of my online time on PinkBike during the summer months.

Mountain biking in general is the primary sport for me. I tell people all the time that Mountain biking is the gate way drug. I started mountain biking first, than got into downhill MTB, then snow boarding, rock climbing. Also got into back packing which I to me is the first step to mountaineering.

I don't downhill much, I do more all mountain riding, but my preference is for downhill. It is expensive though, both the cost of the gear and lift passes and travel (I don't have a lift assist hill anywhere close) I ride a turner spot and specialized big hit for my downhill/free ride rig. Down hill is like walking on glass though, love it...
