TR: Sierra Buttes, Upper Sardine Lake, and Car Backpacking

So me and my friend erik took a trip to the Sierra Buttes. We really winged this one just threw camping gear in the car not even knowing where to camp. We rolled into lower sardine lake at about 11 pm, pitch black and drove up this OHV road to get away from everyone else. We drove up some rocks and just threw our gear down on the ground and slept. The next morning we were awoken by the sunrise to this:

We actually made it up to upper sardine lake. It was quite a surprise because we were unable to see anything when we came in. You could then turn 180 degrees and see this:

Daym right in the middle of everything

Another beautiful picture of the lake in the morning with the buttes

We had realized now what we drove up last night ahahha

So we immediately decided we needed to go up to the summit of the buttes where there was the fire lookout. There is a road that goes a bit of the way, and then you have to hike.

Heres a picture of the lookout. Its just a tiny little bump at the top

And as we made our way up the hill

And gnar stairs

and at the top

After eating a breakfast of frosted flakes after a safety meeting about the dangers of being on top of a cliff we headed back down.

So we continued on exploring the miles of OHV roads around Downieville and the Sierra Buttes. Hairy descents we let the engine cool after a gnarly decent in low gear.

First time we passed this we thought it was a dead guy in a chair ahahah. Luckily not!

Meals of champions (thats backpack food mixed with top ramen)

and the way real men cook steak!

and heres some more random epic pictures from around the campsite

Sunset on the buttes

We left the shutter of the camera open for 2 hours looking at the sky and this is what we got!

Sunset on lower sardine lake

and check out where we parked! ahahah

But soon it was time to go

Looking back at the buttes for the last time. Maybe our next adventure will be on a splitboard up here?

Its a little bit north of Tahoe. Somewhat near Downieville and in the Gold Lakes Basin or something. Its 25-30 mins north of Downieville on 49 and then you go on a bunch of tiny roads into the mountains.
