Paddling in the Hudson

This is my 4th Summer paddling in the Hudson.
(though I couldn't paddle much last year due to NYCM training)

Manhattan Kayak Company has been my go to place for both Kayak and SUP.

The Hudson is very busy waterway.
(full of big cruises, water taxis, private boats, yachts, freight ships...)
And it can be dicey time to time, but I always felt safe going out in a group with a tour guide.

Last Sunday was another great day in the water practicing SUP and Kayaking at night.

Those big cruises create some massive wakes.

Sun goes down, switch to kayak.

When there's a sizable ship passes by, we normally huddle together and try to get out of the way.

It is pretty special experience to paddle with New York City in the backdrop.

Then this happens two days later in the same route with the same tour guide.

Ferry Collison With Kayakers On Hudson River Under Investigation

11 kayakers collide with a ferry and 4 got hurt.

It is till under investigation.
But they think the ferry was pulling out with extremely bright conditions from the sun to the west and didn't see the kayakers.
Ran them over and some got crash or the wake capsized them.

Jay was the tour guide who got hurt the most.
(severe compound fracture of his arm, partially severed)
I've toured with Jay many times and I know for fact he's a very safety comes first kinda guy.

I'm not surprised this happened (though this was company's first incident in two decades) and won't stop me from paddling.
Anything can happen to anybody over literally doing nothing.

But my friend who paddles with me is pretty shaken up.
And my boyfriend is totally freaked.

I may have to lay low for a while...

Nice pics. That is scary!!!!! I much prefer to paddle on smaller lakes. Tried Lake Ontario here in Toronto but honestly it's too cold and too choppy!!!!

Hudson is not a easy place to paddle.
Around Manhattan is where the river ends and the ocean begins.
So the river has pretty strong tide itself.
Also there are wakes from all directions created by boat traffic.

I've never paddled in a lake before.
I can only imagine that's much easier and more peaceful.
At least no need to worry about getting run over by a ferry.
