O hai, its Boarderaholic! (I'm Shredthegnar101 from the 'fish.)
Anyway, just found this thread. There are a TON of options for longboards these days, so its easy to get caught up in the misplaced hype.
For those looking for an really cheap longboard, with FANTASTIC quality, check out Churchill MFG.
They've got a huge selection, and are very well regarded in the Longboarding Community.

For wheels, please, please, please do yourself a favor, and don't go Orangatang just because everyone tells you too. The 86a Orangatang line-up slides like absolute shit compared to the rest of the market, and are completely overpriced.
I recommend any square-lipped wheel if you are just cruising around, but round lipped is the way to go for sliding.
For trucks, I would go Paris v2 180s. Ive ridden most of the trucks on the market today for longboards, and I must say that nothing comes close to the fluidity and lean/turn as Paris.
I started longboarding as a space-filler in between snowboarding seasons, and now I love it almost as much as snowboarding. Have fun out there, and wear a helmet.
