This. I picked up a used Never Summer on CL last spring. I hopped on it a couple of times before I realized that I was literally gonna fucking kill myself if I kept riding that thing.

I had never longboarded before and I was way too comfortable with speed from snowboarding. There was none of the usual self preservation fear that would normally control a beginner. I had no concept of when I was going fast enough to run it out or not. After 3-4 barrel rolls on pavement, I sold it on CL for exactly what I paid.

I was looking and looking and looking and everything I was coming across was used for $170... Totally out of my range. So I decided that I was going to make my own longboard. Now me and my sister are researching, gathering materials, and designing our boards to make our own!
If you look on youtube, it's really not that hard, and even looks a little fun! (If you are into that stuff.)

Reputable companies like Never Summer usually hold their value really, really well as long as the set up hasn't been beaten into the ground.

I've had a few longboards in the past couple years.
If you want a cheap one, just make one. There are lots of different methods.

It's free & don't think because it's not store bought that it won't ride good.

All the boards I've made rode awesome with the exception of one.
All built with completely different methods.

My first one, I used a round wooden table that spilt into 2 half circles, put them center side down so the round half circles were facing up.
Bent one piece of 3/8 ply around the tables, & screwed it down, slathered it up with glue & put the other one over top of it. Then I blasted it with a million brad nails, so it wouldn't lose it's concave.

Board #2 I made on a lunch break @ a reno job site.
I took a 4 foot long 2x10 header, drew a line about 6 inches from either end, set my circular saw to half the depth of the 2x10 & cut a whole bunch of slits in it.
Then flipped it over & did the same thing to the middle section, then smashed out all the wood where the slits were.
Made a 4 foot long drop down deck out of a single solid piece of wood that was destined for the dump. In under 1/2 an hour.

Board #3 turned out far better than I could've hoped.
Had a piece of aluminum 4 feet long by 5 inches wide by 1/8 thick, screwed it to my carport post & bent it into the shape of a landyachtz Evo, then smashed my old TV stand & dropped a piece of the plywood into the drop of the aluminum.

This created a board like nothing I'd ever ridden, this board was incredible.
The wood platform that you stood on was super ridged, while the aluminum that the trucks were attached too, was able to bend.
This was like having leaf springs @ either end of the board.
All the road vibrations were gone. Smoothest ride ever!!
Ever.

It just got stolen out of the back of my truck about a week ago, while in McDonalds for less than 5 min.

Now I'm gonna have to make a new one, I'm goin' with the exact same design as the one above, except this time I have a piece of Titanium with the exact same measurements except 1/16 thick & this piece has concave bent into it or convex. I haven't figured out which side I'm going to have facing up?

Make one like this I swear you'll love it.

I've been 100kmh on my old tv stand

I made my own land paddle as well. Similar to this one, except free. Never in a million years would I pay $100 for that.

Bamboo pole from the ski mountain, rubber end of a crutch for the bottom, with the top piece of a banister for the handle.

Longboards are always up on Whiskeymilitia. They are honestly on there more than anything else. Just keep an eye on that and know what you're looking for. They're usually around a $100 for really good boards that are usually $300 or something like that.

There's a 50% off sale price deal on departmentofgoods.com right now that applies to their longboard completes.. Not very many options but I just snagged a GoldCoast Honey for $75 shipped. They got a Santa Cruz and a Sector9 left:
