Default kiteboarding in the vancouver area

hey water legged folks!

i introduced myself over in the intro forum as Richard from True Snowboards, and being the off season for snowboarding around here, Simply^Ride invited me to post away about kiteboarding over here in the wakeboarding forum.

i'm a novice kiteboarder - i can get up and going on land, sea, and snow - but water is the most challenging due to, well, water - so i'm not so hot on the sea... yet! i plan to kite a fair bit in squamish, bc, this summer & hope to be traveling up wind at will by the end of the summer vs. losing ground (well, wateR) down wind. in terms of difficulty, shallow snow on a frozen lake is the easiest to master the basics on w/ a snowboard or skis (metal edges to edge against) followed by mountainboards on grass or hard packed beach sand, then water.

as for the local kiteboarding scene, you can check it out here - including LIVE WEB CAMS that you can control: Skypilot Kiteboarding :: a global network for kiters :: Kiteboarding Lessons in Squamish & Vancouver, BC

if anyone has any basic questions, feel free to post and i'll answer what i can. just because i'm not throwing down tricks on the water yet doesn't mean i haven't been around the sport for a few years. if it's beyond my knowledge/experience, i'll simply tell ya where to go: skypilot!

cheers guys,
Richard @ True Snowboards - Advanced Snowboard Design and Engineering

How cold is the water up there?

I see a few pictures and the guys are wearing full wetsuits.

very cold.

the squamish river enters the ocean immediately up wind of the launch spit, and it's basically flowing ice from glacial run off. even in july & august i'll sport a dry suit and clothes underneath there. people either wear a dry suit or a full winter suit there. some may wear a bit thinner suit, but not too many. the water on the down wind side of the spit is cool, but on the upwind side it's downright COLD. if anyone goes down in the river current a couple of jet skis are scrambled ASAP to go and retrieve them/ensure they're a-okay, because even in the summer it'd only be a mere matter of minutes before they lose consciousness due to the water temps being so low. if they're way out in the bay it's not AS bad if they get caught in the current of the river's outflow, as it'll just take 'em out a bit... but it's still brutally cold & the ski's are sent scrambling david hasselhoff stylee. :P

Damn that's kind of scary, I guess I am lucky to be wakeboarding in almost 80 degree water

I guess it all comes with the territory, I am not sure if would be able to withhold those temps, I am actually kind of a pussy when it comes to cold water .
