I owned an R1 for a while (2005) and while it was a FUN bike, I probably would never buy one again. I'd got for an FZ1 or an FZ8 instead. There's nothing fun about numb wrists while riding it at slow speeds! The R1 needed to be doing about 100 km/h (60 MPH) before the wind would push enough on my chest to allow my weight to sit neutral.
I started on an FZ6 and while it's a more clunky beginners bike, the overall feel was more enjoyable than the R1. I could ride the FZ6 all day and want to jump on it again the next day...
edit: Just looked at Yamaha's site and I see they released an FZ9, it's an I3 instead of an I4, a little more displacement and a lot more oversquare than the FZ8/Fazer 8 powerplant. Better mileage, lighter, cheaper, only drawback I see is a much smaller fuel tank. My FZ6 had an 19L (5 Gal) tank, ran on regular, and got good mileage... It was cheap and fun to run!
