MTB helmet suggestions?

So I'm totally new to mountain biking. Was cruising through some woods, nothing major just a trail through some local woods, and took my first spill side swiping a tree. Nothing major, but enough for this old fool who has never worn a helmet biking to decide it's probably time.

Thing is I really kind of loathe the look of most bike helmets. For boarding I'm a bucket helmet guy, currently an anon. I can see why in the summer heat that style is maybe not a great choice. But I just really hate the pointed look of most.

Anyway, any recommendations on types to look at that I may like?

Had a similar experience on my first mtb trail ride. I also decided afterward that a helmet was prolly a good idea. (...this from a guy who back in the mid 80's, rode motorcycles in SoCal traffic w/o a helmet!)

I like my Bell helmet. I have a weird shaped head and just like everything else I want to wear,.. I have to try on a shitload of brands & styles to find something that fits comfortably and that I like the looks.

Bell's website has some cool & interesting looking options. Unfortunately,.. or perhaps for me fortunately, I can't speak from experience to their protective qualities. But they're a well know brand, so I assume they're basically good.

Here's the link to their mtb helmets. (...not that I presume you're "Google Impaired" or anything.)

Ok the Bell stoker mips looks doable. But man, even that one makes me feel like I'm in the middle of a Halo game.

....better than ending up "wearing" a Halo!! LoL

If that look & style is really that objectionable to you? Might check out "Nutcase" helmets. More bucket or hatlike. Less Stormtroopery!

Oh believe me, that isn't gonna happen!

I don't mind all that much the above, some of them are just too overboard for me. And those nutcase things give me a portlandia episode vibe for some reason.

Actually just realized me REI cash back came in. Was wondering what I'd be spending it on.

Ended up getting the stoker above. There was a fox flux that I liked also, but my son was with me and needed a new helmet and picked that one and I decided not be seen riding with a mini me.

I use the POC Trabec which I no complaints with, I'd say try several on before making your decision.

Features to look for comfort first and foremost, weight, good ventilation and protection

You want something with MIPS, and some cerebellum coverage. Plenty of options now from TLD, POC, Giro, Smith, Bell, Sweet, 661, etc... just look for ones that looks less like a roadie helmet and have some coverage for the back of the head, usually marketed towards the enduro rider. Fitment is key, so you'll need to hit up your local shops and try some on.
