Driving down the road Monday, 40mph in traffic and saw the light up ahead turn red. Probably 30-40 feet from the back of the car in front of me stopping. Stepped on the brakes, nothing. E-brake wasn't doing much and the car in front of me was getting close. Bounced the car off a curb into the empty lot to my right. Had to do a couple really hard downshifts and shut the car down. So glad I have a 5 speed (and AAA). Anyone else ever have this happen?

No obvious signs of it at all or I would've stopped and checked stuff out, only thing that I noticed before any of this was I was getting a little steering wheel shake, but thought it was just an alignment issue. Went from acceleration to needing to brake, I was going down a fairly small hill at the time too. I ended up in a large empty grass lot which was perfect for the time, lol. All is well now, except needing a new front rim after the curb hop and an alignment

This isn't nearly as scary as that, but I drove a POS car up the mountain for a while season before last. The car would randomly die... So what did it do? It died right before a sharp switchback going downhill 40MPH, killing my power steering. Foot to break, Shift to neutral, start car, TURNNNNNNN!
Fuck that car.

Man, you're lucky you had a straight runout (i assume) once off the hill. A truck did this in my hometown when I was a kid and blew right into a hotel at the bottom of the hill, killing a waitress.

At first I read this and thought... "Oh snap! That just happened to someone else I know!!!" Then I realized... you're the same person. Way to go me. The delay post on the story caught me off guard.

The AAA guy didn't say much but he got there quick, the girl on the phone was helpful as well. Money well spent considering I had it towed about 20 miles from where it happened, had free towing up to 100 miles I believe. Yeah this is a couple days after my facebook post, lol. |

So....what did the mechanics or who ever you took it to after you got it towed say?
This happened to a friend of mine earlier this year, he was descending a moderate gradient in a articulated truck, carrying a container, when the brakes gave out...he was lucky that there was some run off at the bottom of the hill (and that it was clear of other trucks) and managed to coast down through his gears to a gentle holt. He said it was 'reasonably scary'.

Not a whole lot, I was in a bad mood anyways and was just like "here's my cell, call me for the quote then call me when it's done." My car isn't rusted out badly or anything so I wasn't really concerned with anything on the underside any more than another driver.
