4x4 ALWAYS.

You will regret it for the rest of your life if you don't. Espically being a snowboarder. It's not even questionable

like everyone said, 4x4 is essential. If I didn't already have a subaru

and had money and room for another vehicle, i'd probably get a tacoma and lift it, put big ass knobby tires on it and maybe even some roof hellas

. Tacoma's last a loooooong time too and they're really dependable. for sure go 4x4 if you're gonna get one though, or you'll have trouble in the snow cause there's no weight over the rear wheels

if you plan to go where there is going to be snow,especially if there are hills, you will want 4x4. You dont want to be that person stuck in a snow bank on the side of the road, or who cant get going from a stop because all hes doing is spinning, or goes to the resort, it snows, and you are stuck in your parking space (been in each situation and helped people out of each situation). There is just something wonderful about slapping that shifter back (at least in my case) into 4H and putting on your me gusta face

but tundras are pretty good trucks. Toyota has build some of their reliability formula into them. check out the tundra deconstructed videos on youtube

And I've got 30k miles on my Goodyear wrangler dura trac tires and they're at half tread. Show me a better tire for the price.

+1 for Goodyear wrangler dura trac tires. I have a 99 4Runner with them and i could not be happier. 170k and no issues.

sooo it looks like this tacoma is just not going to happen....been working on it for 3 weeks and one thing after another...

so try not to laugh, but I have an opportunity to steal a slightly used Honda Ridgeline.... How are these things in winter/snow/mountains? I won't be doing too much/if any off-roading in the summer. Just a full on snowboarding-shred-mobile. Could the ridgeline take on that task? I know it's like a car with a bed, but how is the 4wd/awd system? kicking in only when needed, unless you lock it but can only stay under 18mph...

any input? I know there are better vehicles but this is looking like a last resort, as far as 4wd goes.

EDIT: and not literally steal, just an incredible price

I have no experience with Ridgelines. I love Toyota trucks. They make a great compact truck.

But, yeah, you pay a ridiculous premium for them. After I sold my '01 Tahoe, I looked into Tacomas. I was really looking for a 4 door small truck with a 6 speed. I test drove them and liked them, but sorry, I was able to buy a loaded Z-71 Tahoe with34k miles on it for less than any Taco with double the miles and half the options. Until the Toyota love fest dies off I'm probably out. Look, any decent newer vehicle these days are good for $200k if you take care of them. I sold my old Tahoe with 160k on it and I had performed no repairs outside of general maintenance.

HA! from what i hear the ridgeline is a joke of a truck. Its like a half ass subie with some more ground clearence. Whats up with the taco situation? Whats giving you problems? Price, quantity of vehicles, miles?? If a good truck comes up, you better be ready to go there within a few days and test drive it and be ready to pull the trigger if it all checks out. There are unfortunatley no amazing deals with these things, if someone is selling it they know what they have and how much its worth and what the demand is for it.

i'd be happy to wait for the right tacoma to come around (or any awd/4wd). but i'm stuck in california without a car, been here for a week - dad and friends practically run the dealers in this area, need to get back to salt lake asap or i'll be out of a job. at this point i just need something. i can always dump whatever i get in a year... just need ANY THING to get me up the damn mountain and out of orange county! (and to work)

Two guys I work with here in vail love their ridge lines. Say they ride great, make it through snow great, have no issues.... Just not a TRAIL vehicle.

Yotas last forever if you just do the basic regular maintenance. Tacoma is prob the best pickup out there. Other good, slightly cheaper, alternatives might be worth consdiering too like the Nissan Frontier (also rebadged as a Suzuki Equator).
