Religion in Utah

I don't want to seem rude if anybody on here is Mormon, but what is it like living in the Salt Lake City area?

Here's my take and I only know about Mormans that live around the SLC metro area, if you get deep into the country side who the hell knows what you'll find(Like anywhere)

Probably half the people I work with(lame office job) are Morman, they can't drive worth a shit but all have giant SUV's, generally their good people who leave you alone(unlike say Jahova Witnesses who beat your fucking door down and leave a stack of shitty pamphlets) they drive nice cars, dress nice, generally have well behaved kids, are actively involved in their community in a positive way(like helping out neighbors, keeping shit clean and crime under control) most of them have been willing to go out of their way to help the girlfriend and I even though it's obvious we have no intention of ever converting.

In short the red neck , dumb fuck assholes that live in the midwest at home piss me off way more than any Mormans so far, there's people like Snowvols and WasatchMan who have been here way longer then me and might be able to give you a better answer.

People are ignorant like anywhere or anything don't listen to other people say, go there and find out for yourself first hand what Utah and the average morman is really like.

Well I used to live in orem for a school year and I couldn't stand it. They went to dance parties for fun and parents always judged me for not being Mormon which is fine, but I'm just wondering how it will be like in college! In orem you were either way way into partying and drugs and would go nowhere or you were very uptight. I'm somewhat in the middle

Then do what you want to do, not what others want. If people won't respect you for who you are, they probably aren't worth your time. It's going to be like that everywhere, you just have to be strong enough to draw the line.

the problem with monochromatic and insulated cultures is that finding the people in the middle who know how to chill is very hard. i live in a normal fairly diverse culture (albeit VERY VERY white) and there are still alot of people who have a hard time being chill. add something like statewide religion/culture to the mix and you have a bunch of people who will struggle mightily for balance with anything that is not from their own petri dish.

not saying anything against the god-fearing mormons of utah by any means, but growing up in a similar and insular society myself, i can attest that "balance" is something these people will struggle with more than most.

is there a lack of pot smoking hippies who love beer in utah? certainly not. all you have to do to hear some good mormon jokes is goto a bar in SLC.

i'm a guy who likes to live in the middle, and drunks who want to close-talk me about whatever stupid shit they have to say bother me plenty as much as any mormon who just wants to help me make it to heaven.

just saying, theres culture shock to be had in utah, regardless, theres a dichotomy there, its interesting to say the least. not really a big deal, its not fucking beirut.
