the problem with monochromatic and insulated cultures is that finding the people in the middle who know how to chill is very hard. i live in a normal fairly diverse culture (albeit VERY VERY white) and there are still alot of people who have a hard time being chill. add something like statewide religion/culture to the mix and you have a bunch of people who will struggle mightily for balance with anything that is not from their own petri dish.
not saying anything against the god-fearing mormons of utah by any means, but growing up in a similar and insular society myself, i can attest that "balance" is something these people will struggle with more than most.
is there a lack of pot smoking hippies who love beer in utah? certainly not. all you have to do to hear some good mormon jokes is goto a bar in SLC.
i'm a guy who likes to live in the middle, and drunks who want to close-talk me about whatever stupid shit they have to say bother me plenty as much as any mormon who just wants to help me make it to heaven.
just saying, theres culture shock to be had in utah, regardless, theres a dichotomy there, its interesting to say the least. not really a big deal, its not fucking beirut.
