Pakistan Avalanche

As much as you guys all think I'm a troll from the Riding a 181 thread, I figure someone on here will find this interesting.

News from The Associated Press

Avalanche buried approximately 100 Pakistani Army troops. They're working to get them out.

Someone else can read into this significantly better than I can, I'm sure. So you all feel free to discuss from your more informed point of view.

EDIT: I realize how that first line would lead to both feelings of insult and discussion of that board here.
First, I didn't mean to offend, simply I find it interesting that there was such backlash. In any case, believe what you want to believe, I'll get pics up as soon as school's out.
Secondly, if you really have to talk about the 181 and all the related fallout, do it here.

It's on the AP, Reuters, and the BBC.

Fascinating stuff, now back to the 181. Did you pick that board up? How's it working out?

No survivors...the avalanche was 21 meters deep. (60+ feet).

If they were in a building, as it seems at least some were, then they may have a slight chance. I'm not saying it's a good chance, but any chance is better than no chance. Crazy though. Wish there were some pics. 70+ feet deep is a pretty big avalanche.

Found another related article: Icy killing fields of 'world's highest battleground' - Yahoo! News Apparently this happened on the world's highest battleground.

Apparently the number missing and presumed dead is up to 135. Damn shame, wonder what triggered it.

Pakistani reporting in!

Rescue efforts are underway...it was real quick response with the airforce being involved immediately and heavy machinery being airlifted into the area to aid rescue operations.

I am doubtful they are survivors but the rescuers are working feverishly as if there could be survivors. And yes this is the highest battlefield in the world. You can see some pictures here...

Most casualties up there are from the extreme weather instead of actual combat. This event might get both sides to come to an agreement and pull back off the damn glacier.

It costs something like a million dollars a day to keep operations going up there.
