Just replaced a headlight bulb in my wifes 09 Traverse, took over an hour to do. Had to unscrew to fenderwell and go in behind the tire to get to it. With just a little creative engineering it should take no more then 5 minutes. Thank god for google, otherwise it probably would have taken me three hours to do this.
Of course we all know the coorporate fucktards design things this way so the average person will have to take their cars into a shop to have things like this fixed, then they bend you over and fuck the shit out of your wallet. Just a couple of years ago I had to replace a battery on my daughters car, I think it was a dodge stratus. Had to do a google search just to find where the battery was and wouldn't you know it, its behind the fenderwell. Had to remove the tire to get the fucking thing out. Fucking genius dumb fucking engineers. I say make everyone of these fucking idiots have to work on the shit they design and we might get some decent autos on the road.

You think that sucks...try owning anything German. Specialty tools list from hell, just started changing oil myself on my GTI, had to buy a $40.00 oil filter draining tool and specialty socket, so that I don't crack the ass backward plastic oil filter housing.

I just spent 3 hours replacing an oxygen sensor. There is exactly 1/8" clearance between the tip of the unscrewed sensor and the firewall. Even with my long skinny forearms, I could only get 3 fingers on it to get the threading started. Who puts something like that there?

I fucking hate working on vehicles. I hate it. And the engineers who design those things could definately put some more emphasis on serviceability. The spark plug thing for instance is absolute bullshit.
That said, I doubt its gonna be easy to cram all the shit into an engine bay that needs to go in there and still make every single item easily serviceable. Last edited by Frozen; 09-30-2012 at 08:47 PM. Reason: changed for less abrasiveness |

Biggest reason vehicles are designed the way they are is because of assembly. Torque bits, security screws, hex head nuts, Allan wrenches, exc are all things done to keep Joe Schmo from working out in the garage. Things like this, spark plugs being in fucked up places, body parts on top of frame bolts, and other stuff like this are done because ease of assembly. All these parts are made in different factories and then thrown together at another so the engineers and designers throw it together in a way that makes for the quickest production to save time and money. They don't care about the next guy who has to work on it.

I had to replace the headlight switch in my Taco today (my dog chewed on it and the lights wouldn't work right) and instead of being able to just take the cover off of the steering column, the screws were put right behind the steering wheel, so I had to take that apart as well. At least it came right off and I didn't need a puller.

Back in the 80s I worked for winston tire in LA, did brakes, struts, tires and oil changes. I don't remember which model it was but there was a nissan that you had to undo the motor mount and jack the engine up to get the oil filter out. Fucking retarded.
I still think its 50% bad design and 50% intentional to get more revenue in repairs.

I'll bet there's more to this method than just madness. With the high % percentage of cars being leased for 4-5 years, I'm sure that some of these serviceability issues are deliberate and intended to make getting another new car much more desirable than keeping the five year old one. Probably why the 100000 mile service interval involves changing nearly everything.

Companies start with chassi, drive terrain, main body structure, and then work on from there so its mostly ease of production. Once one peice is done just set the next on top and bolt it down. Sure they do something's so you have to take it to a shop but all the electronics now people just make things worse so why not help them not too? Trust me when I say shops and techs hate this crap as much as we do. Quote:
It's like batteries being put in rediculas places anymore (saw one under the back seat, also have seen trunks). It's not to be an inconviance to you but because they are running out of room in the engine compartment. You will still have to jump it and what not and companies are aware of this, that's why they tell you in the cars manual.
