Looking to buy a truck/SUV

I'm a teenager looking to buy my first car/truck/SUV, I want something sick and sporty, for under $10k Canadian. It's gotta be big enough to fit 4 boards/gear and 4 people. I'd also like it to have a really good/loud sound system. It's gotta be versatile to trek through the alberta snow. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Jeep Grand Cherokee. Infiniti audio systems that come with them are pretty legit and Jeeps are pretty much the best bang for your buck as far as 4x4 SUV's go in my opinion. Ive owned 3 different ones and if you take care of them they last a while, plus if it breaks parts are fairly cheap.

I really like the Chevy Tahoes too but the gas on them blows, not that Jeeps are the best for gas but still better

You are not going to get a sporty SUV under 10k. Best bet is a pathfinder. You can find one in good condition for around 10k. Depending on the trim they will have decent interior and sound systems.

I like Jeeps too but they are not as reliable.....

You can find cheep jeeps on occasion, but in my opinion they tend to be more then they are worth. They are often fun, and the older models that are less compact are easy to work on, but as stated, not known for reliability.

a bag of it 10-15-2012 08:17 PM

I would try to find a 90's lands cruiser

Yea I've been looking at a few of those lately, and there's definitely some in great condition, low kms, for decent price. Cargo space would be for sure enough to hold 4 boards?

My GF bought a '98 4Runner last year for $5k in Calgary. Has high mileage but it's a great truck. Stock stereo is weak but I'm not big on stock stereos anyway.

Besides that, DON'T BLOW $10k ON A VEHICLE! It's a waste of money. There. I said it. If you like working on things at all, grab something cheaper, older, higher mileage and make it your own.

If the engine ever goes in that 4Runner I could grab another and toss it in for under $1000. Tons of parts available in the wrecking yards too.

Of course everybody will have their opinion, but I'm a Toyota guy through and through.

Oh yeah, our driving isn't bad, there's more cold and ice than snow, so winter tires are more important than 4WD... Just my $.02 of course. :D

Haha yea well I think that my budget is realistically more around $5-7k (I have $3k and my rents said they'd kick in some) so really I don't have a whole lot to chose from that doesn't have high kms, and I'm a gearhead as well, so ill probably be tinkering from day 1. And stock stereo would mostly likely get replaced at some point anyways. Thanks for the advice!

No worries, if you can find something that already has snow tires (in good condition) that's a bonus. Otherwise set aside $800-$1000 for good snow tires. We really do need them for 6+ months of the year here due to low average temps.

If you have 4 people and 4 boards in the car you can fold down the single rear seat and lay them that way but its gonna be a lil tight for the 2 people in the back...or you could prop them up so the noses go over the middle of the back seat.

If theres more than 3 of us in my Jeep I just throw the roof rack on though
