the new foresters are huge and ugly, 02-07 is the best year for pretty much any impreza, OBS or forester imo. I wish i had a OBS or Forester xt instead of my WRX for camping/road trip space, but i could not have gotten as good of a deal.

I just bought a brand new forrester in July. ouch. that hurt. She's not that ugly tho, I do feel like a fucking soccer mom in the thing. I miss my old car which had twice the hp but did not like snow, ice, rocks or gravel. At all.

FYI, if you dont have much money, I would be very careful about buying a Subaru with a Turbocharged 2.5 engine (EJ255). First of all they run on premium gas, secondly they require much more maintenance than most cars. The turbo's regularly go around 100k - with the possibility of taking the engine with it. The oil change intervals are 3000 miles, miss it at your turbos peril. The 05/06 models have a catted up pipe which also takes the turbo/engine with it if/when it melts. This information is pretty easy to find on the web.
Having said all that, I wouldn't trade my Legacy for ANYTHING. I love the damn thing, if you keep up with the maintenance and the person before you did, they are great cars. The 2.2 subaru engine is known to be pretty bulletproof, and the 2.0 Turbo in the WRX is known to be pretty good also. I am extremely surprised that you cant find any under 15k. I bought my high mile 05 LGT for about 9k. You can pick the bugeye wrx's up for pretty cheap, I have seen some wagons for under 7k. Good luck whatever you buy. |

Don't give up on finding a Subaru. With winter tires they are an absolute blast to drive in the snow. As for worries about turbocharged version, as with any car, just keep up on the maintenance and it will keep loving you for many many miles. My 02 WRX had 230k miles when I sold it and I have since been in contact with the new owner and it is still running strong.
For the record, only the 02/03 WRXs came with catalytic converters in the up pipes. After that, Subaru changed the ECM tuning instead of putting a cat in the up pipe. And really, premium gas isn't that much more than regular. This time around though I'm in the market for a Forester XT. |
