Helmets - Detuning Board - comp of questions

My wife and I will be snowboarding for the first time shortly, and I was curious if I should buy helmets. Im sure this question has been asked to death, but I figure i will start the debate all over again !

I have never de-tuned a board, should i attempt this, or should i pay someone to do this. I have a new board, and its edges are super sharp. I have watched some youtube videos on it, and it doesnt seem all that difficult, but I am a newb... O ya , I do not plan on goign to the park ever, my main goal is to be able to carve down a pillowish cloud of marshmallowy white stuff, listening to bob marley " sober" being @ 1 with the universe " or something like that" .

My board - http://www.snowboard-review.com/snow...t_series_btx1/

Would a patagonia R2 jacket, and a non insulated goretex shell be enough to keep us warm while snowboarding?

Should i get wrist guards just in case?

Do i need to even take lessons when snowwolf has that bad ass "how to" on youtube?

I dont care what people think, but will I look completely gay " no offense to the gays" if I am trying to put the smack down on the bunny slope, with a helmet on ?

p.s - If you can think of any more random stuff you were unsure about the first time you went boarding, please feel free to post it here.

:dunno:

When I first started at my local resort I felt out of place because I was one of the few people WITHOUT a helmet.. Helmets are " IN"

Helmet
Wrist guards
Lessons

Yes to all three.

And stop worrying so much about fitting in. Focus on improving and enjoying.

Yes, you'll look totally gay, beginners should never wear a helmet, only pros!

Helmet, lessons, yes. I was 29 years old last year on the bunny hill with a helmet for an entire day. It was awesome and I am so glad I did it!

+1 to all of this, and to the OP, why do you want to detune? That's really only for guys sliding rails all day. You WANT your edges to be good and sharp. Trust me!

i read it in a snowboarding magazine. They said when you get ur board from the factory you have to detune it, all my information is based on google searches lol..

You're being serious about not detuning my board right? You're not just being mean are oyu ?

Where I ride, it's usually the beginners that aren't wearing helmets (can't figure that one out).

You didn't say whether you are in a pillowy-soft powder area or in the East, but either way you might appreciate some padded shorts to protect your tailbone. You'll fall and either bang your head or your butt and when you don't land on those it will be your wrists or knees. You might even want knee pads.

Sounds like a lot? The less it hurts, the more confidence you get and the faster you will progress, which is essential when you're first starting out.

As for detuning, it depends on the board -- camber you can do like in the vids if you want, rocker or otherwise - no.
