well, it's close to tahoe and it's NOT in california.
Im renting my house out in LA this spring so I can GTFO of cali. Carson City is on the top of the list of possible places to move to. Im going to check it out in january and again in the spring along with a few other places. in the mean time...any one have any info you'd like to share? I've already browsed the websites for the chamber of commerce and the city itself. I'm not too concerned with the work situation however. As long as there is reliable high speed internet, Im pretty good on that front. Mostly curious about what it's like to live there, how easy it is to get to tahoe when it's dumping is it all old people and families etc? According to census data it's not all old people but it seems like the only reason people move there is to retire (which is kinda of what Im doing but Im younger then most retireees!)I figure the crime and drugs can't be worse then where I am now and any entertainment i need wouldb e fount in tahoe. however Im concerned about food. Like is there thai, viet namese and sushi?! or am I gonna have to forgo that?

My wife's p's have lived in Carson City and Dayton for the last 10 years or so. I always feel some culture shock that I'm in this country driving past Bunny Ranch II and the like. If Nevada is a state in the union, someone please explain to me about federal marijuana prohibition
![]() ![]() There is plenty of asian around but as the area is sort of spread out like greater Reno 'burbs you may have to do some driving. Coming from LA I'd keep my expectations pretty low and just look for the hidden gems. I'm all about food myself, I get this, running to grab a bowl of pho on my way in to work now as a matter of fact! Tahoe is pretty accessible from there have taken that road several times, not sure how it is with snow, but ... That area isn't particularly for me, but the proximity of some good mountains certainly helps. Nevada is just kinda wierd, but I'm not a Vegas person. Desert is very cool nature imo. CONGRATS ON YOUR DECISION MIX'!!!

thanks. and yeah, food is the #1 thing I like about LA. I mean, I had burmese food the other day, Burmese food fer gawds sake!!! I've accepted that I am not going to find that pretty much anywhere else. But decent sushi and bun is kind of important. I prefer bun and bahn mi to pho but I do like pho as well....but I will be back to the home land every other month or so for family/work visits. so that's not the end of the world. I am more worried about uptight religious people, which is why Im not considering Utah. (and it's too far from my nieces/nephews) I'll take the bunny ranch over a bunch of church people any day of the week. Or that the population is all over 70 or something. I know NV has medical mj, but how hard is it to get a card?! I personally hate vegas. I had a really bad trip there one time, at a frickin dead show (yeah, Im old) and I've never really gotten over it LA is closer to Vegas then Carson City I think, anyway.so why is the area not for you? seriously? Im looking to get away from millions of people, smog, traffic, noise, idiots, insane cost of living etc...and somewhere that is closer to the mountains. I am very close to mountains now but not ones with snow

I lived there back in the 80s for about six months, pretty nice clean little town. Unlike Reno which has really went down hill the last few years. Pretty conservative and not really a party town. The road to Tahoe was always maintained well and its just a 30 minute drive from your door to the slopes.
I was there about two years ago and the freeway from Reno to Carson looked to be close to completion at that time.

thanks! That is my biggest concern really. Being able to get to Tahoe in a storm. And getting back down the 395 to Cali. Not as concerned with getting to Reno but it's important. Fine with it not being a party town, there's plenty of that around the lake and in reno Im sure. I'd like to avoid that actually! It seems really, really cheap there. And I can't seem to figure out why, like what's wrong with it? There's not much in the way of jobs but with it's close proximity to Tahoe I thought it would be more expensive to live there. I do plan on visiting in Jan but I figured it can't hurt to ask around either.

The landscape is pretty awesome...the culture to me is just....curious...? I mean you are trying to pretty much escape most of what LA culture is about? so seems like a good idea. I'm sure I could move there now get an epic pass and be pretty fucken happy. That desert cowboy culture is just interesting... .. ending up there I s'pose isn't far from the realm of possibility for me with them getting older there.

They do??
![]() ![]() I lived in Reno from 96 to 99, and Nv. was a weed nazi state then. One of my neighbors got 60 days in jail for a little shake and a roach. A guy I worked with got 18 months probation for internal possession, yes the cop thought he looked high so he arrested him, took a blood test, then charged him with a felony. You might want to double check the medical thing, I find it hard to believe they have changed that much out there. |

Don't completely ignore the possible effects of it though. I went thru similar shock several times in my life. Going from High School & the rural suburbs of Detroit to the military, a 6 Mo tour in Okinawa Japan, then SoCal (...SanClemente, Laguna, Newport B. etc.) Then moving to NoCal,.. Humboldt County, Eureka. Arcata area. (My ex. was a SoCal Deb,.. she never did get used to the Redwoods!) Talk about culture shock!! Humboldt Co. had everything! From Redneck Hillbilly's (...including some honest to god, hood wearing' KKK) Bikers & meth labs, ...stuck up rich bitch college posers, (Humboldt State Univ.) Then there were the 16-17 yo white girl wanna b hippi chicks with dreads, hairy legs & tie dye panties! along with genuine 60-70 yo "Love In" drop outs from the 60's!!! (...the last 2 groups compromised the majority of the "Dead" contingent for the region!) I loved it up there!! ![]() A few years ago I was thinking about moving back west & did some relocation research. Found this site and used it to compare places & this particular link might be of some use to you. Carson City NV crime rates and statistics - NeighborhoodScout It also has some good real estate & employment graphical maps & info.
