Those ketchup cups you use at McDonald's are expandable. Maybe most people know this, but I only found this out recently. I do know that I've yet to see someone actually expand the cup before filling it with ketchup. They have the potential of holding so much more than the assumed 15 fries worth. (That's my standard use of ketchup, not that of the average fry consummer.)

What's interesting is that although the two cups of water started out at approx 120* and 50*, by the time the experiment was terminated they were both at 0* within the error limits of my shitty thermometer. This is not surprising since how fast a body loses heat is dependant on the difference in temp between the item and the environment. As the two cups of water cooled to the temp of the freezer, the hotter cup would have lost heat a lot faster initially. I'm sure that varying the temp of the freezer and the initial temps of the two cups of water would affect the cooling curves. Things could also be affected by (for instance) the fact that water from the water heater tends to have more particulates and dissolved salts than water that just comes straight in from the street. Anyway, if I really wanted to go all reductio ad absurdum on this thing, I'd refill the partly frozen cup of water with freshly boiled water and stick it in with the almost-ready-to-freeze water. By the logic of the Effect, the boiling water should freeze first.... And yes, I am just that much of a geek. Deal with it.

When I tried the hot water freezing thing, I was a firm skeptic with beers riding on it. While I never paid up following successful arguments about "warm spots in the freezer" and the relative merits of frost as an insulator, I was privately shocked that it wasn't freakin' obvious that hot water freezes slower.
Obviously if you put 1 degree water in one tray and boiling water in the other, it won't work. Put if you put cool water from the tap in one and "hot shower" type temp in the other, it does. |

A few more..
New Zealand was the first country to give women the vote. When they are in the sky they are meteors, when they hit earth they become meteorites. The Sun is gradually getting hotter over time. In about 100 million years or so it will be hot enough on Earth for the oceans to boil away, followed by Earth's atmosphere. I'm guessing that will kind of put an end to snowboarding! The Declaration of Independence was written on Hemp paper. |
