they are super reliable and decent in the snow as far as FWD goes. they can hold plenty of gear if you flip the back seats down.
Not sure why you would want to do any work to it if its your beater car tho.

Its the car my stepbrother gave me to drag race with. I use it for other stuff cause its the only car I got. since Im going to college at either virginia wesleyan or brock university (pretty far) he wants me to leave the evo and hes gonna put it in storage until I get back. while its in storage we're taking the insurance off it and leaving it untagged. so Im gonna take a beater to college while I pay off the evo

As far as the civic situation goes, I owned two of them. They are ok cars, but take this suggestion don't start spending a shit load of $$$ tunning them up, it's not worth it (I made that mistake). Plus on top of that you will never get near the performance of the evo(unless you dump tons of $$$into it), or get this money back when you sell the car. If you end up buying one don't make another mistake I made of buying a tunned one, men the previous owner of the car beat the living crap out of it. I had to invest so much $$$ into it just to make a daily commuter and the funny thing is that the car looked and drove great when I got it, the thing broke down after a month. Another thing vehicles depreciate over time, if you are going to be in college for 4 years getting your bachelors, that car in 4 years is going to take a hit in value. It might not be that bad because the miles are going to be low, but still the car will depreciate a lot (considering that you still have to pay it off). My opinion is that your in a bit of a pickle, because you still have to pay for it, plus you will have to pay for the other one as well. By the way, is your avatar your car? thats a great looking car, I always wanted one of them or a WRX. Good luck with that. But remember the Civic will not come close to the Evo, a stock civic is a slow car that is fuel efficient. In other words they are boring, unless you really sup them up, or you get the SI model I test drove it and it was really peppy the only issue I noticed is that it's a FWD and it limits the handling a bit.
